Does anyone know if the Premium Sound back has any mobile phone handsfree connectivity? For example, can one connect a kit up to use the built-in speakers? And mute the audio when the phone rings?

Any good mobile installation type person should be able to do it. I think it's a matter of sticking some sort of switching diode (actually can't remember the name of the device) to switch circuits when a current is detected coming from another circuit.

When power is transmitted from the mobile phone to the speakers, the switching thing picks up the power coming from the circuit and switches the circuit from receiving signals from the radio to the mobile phone. Once the phone stops transmitting signals to the speakers, the switching device reverts back to the stereo.

I think

I was hoping for a more integrated system where the sound system knows about the phone and vice versa (I.e. "Phone" shows up in the display or something like that). I know on my old Sony headunits, there was a mobile phone jack at the back for various kits and I was thinking along those lines.

Couldn't tell you - I know there's an MP3 auxillary jack which you might be able to use - it's a $30 option. I'd say that would probably do it.

The audio system will almost certainly have a "mute on call" facility so if you install a car kit you're OK. As for putting the phone audio into the AUX input.....that zing zing digital phone crap noise will be just that little bit louder and you wont like it much I'm guessing (bring back the analog phone). Sounds like a REALLY bad idea for a number of reasons including you may have to select the AUX input 'cause it may not auto sense. Also using a device to switch the speakers about may also cause you a problem 'cause if you leave the stereo outputs unloaded while the speakers are connected to the phone as suggested, the amp output devices may be damaged or shut down and take a while to power up again.

Good points. That was the thing I hated about electrical engineering - it's all smoke and mirrors. At least with aerodynamics you can explain things in a physical sense :D

Yeah, this is why I was hoping for a Dummy's "Insert Cable from Mobile Phone Kit Here" option, which handled all of that (like routing the antenna via the window-based antenna to avoid the scanning noise and auto-muting and all that crap).

Oh, well. I have volume controls on the steering wheel and a headset. That'll have to do! :)

It seems that Ford have included an elegant solution. I'll be VERY happy if it works 'cause I have a 6210 nokia :)

this post in fordforums contains details:

Heres a couple of quotes:

JF  in fordforumswrote:

While I don't have it with me (it's in the car), there is a page in your owners handbook that states there are pre-installed plugs in the cars' wiring system under the drivers side(I think) of the dash for a hands free mobile phone kit - compatible with all major brands - to be installed in an intergrated manner so it plays though the ICC and the cars' speakers.

Aussie Pete in fordforums wrote:

In the Nokia range you need a phone of the 5100/6100/6200/6300 series. With the phone you need the car kit, manufactured by Nokia.

To get this setup in your BA you also need the phone presenter from Ford, the Nokia wiring harness (also from Ford although optional if you know what you're doing), and an aerial (more on aerials later).

If you have the Ford wiring you simply find the factory plug, plug it together and find places for the mic, duplex box, and speaker. Mount the cradle on the phone presenter and away you go.

This is something l have been checking into a bit.

l have an Ericsson phone that has bluetooth, and are considering a bluetooth kit. But every dealer l call gives me different answers to my questions. ie can it work with any make of phone, how much does it cost etc.

The AU had some pre-wiring, sounds like the BA is even better. If l can get my hands on a bluetooth hands free (once l find a dealer who knows what they are on about) this may be a relatively simple thing to install myself.

Would be interested to hear of anyone else has looked into bluetooth HF kits at all.

Cheers

Finally found a mobile shop that knows waht they are talking about.

l have an Ericsson T39 with bluetooth, and for $440 l can buy a genuine Ericsson bluetooth hands free car kit, another $100 to have it installed. l think l will go ahead and do it, only hitch is that Ericsson dont have the kits available in Australia yet. Hopefully early next year.

The shop also sold some recently released car stereos that had bluetooth built in. Probably by the time the successor to the BA is released, bluetooth built in to the audio system may be an option. Now that would be cool. :)
