She'll be right! I think the major bonus is the torque rating similar to the t56  Lots of HP and less to wrry about!  :spoton:

The torque rating is much higher than a T56 ... makes the T56 look like a lawn mower gearbox ... these ZFs are behind engines putting out close to 1000Nm and in cars weighing 25% more than the BA range of cars.

Is this the box they run in the new AMG SL65's and Maybachs? I thought they run 7 speeds?

Not many other car's knocking on a newtonkiliometer that I can remember???

Lumpy :spoton:

Don't know for sure on those Mercs ... the Bently runs 950Nm and about 2.5 tonnes

I didn't say there were MANY - just that there ARE

The main reason Grass is that those of us who understand that stock is boring will use a lower rear gear set & therefore much more vroom

If you go much lower in first with an Auto (either dropping the ratio of first, or the diff ratio), you won't be able to launch it... There is only sooo much traction on a set of street tyres.....

Sorry Grass but a lower first gear means less tyre smoke as the car gets "on top" of the tyre quicker & the car speed v tyre speed equals out faster, hope you understand this, if in doubt ask a drag racer

Guys, to make it easier for people who are faily new to this topic, keep the way you speak about each gear on a consistant level...

Though I may understand (through the context of the conversation) that when you say "lower first gear ratio" that you actually mean a SHORTER first gear, a lower first gear actually means the following; 3:1 is lower than 4:1....

But 4:1 is a shorter gear...

So its a shorter first gear, higher ratio :)

I Just thought I would get you guys to pick that up, just in order to help those who might not exactly understand what you mean, but would like too....

BACK OT.

The ZF box shifts roughly twice as fast as our current box, and because each ratio is much closer to the next, each shift is extremely smooth; the revs don't have to drop as far to pick up the next gear...

Therefore the quarter times WILL drop. Each shift is done twice as fast, but the revs do not drop nearly as far.

Net power to the wheels averaged over the entire quarter mile is therefore increased....

THen why in a 4wd is there a high range and a low range? The low range is shorter than the high range. Its the opposite to your theory

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Not quite, 3:1 = 1/3 = 0.33

4:1 = 1/4 = 0.25

0.25 is lower than 0.33, so 4:1 is lower than 3:1

It's a ratio, not a number.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Exactly right - numerically higher means lower ratio. Simple really, and it's always been described that way, well since Adam was in nappies anyway. I really don't think ANY car enthusiast would be confused by this.

Just some further info on why this auto will be quicker than the current four speeder - it has convertor lock-up from 1500rpm in EVERY gear, (yes even reverse). So less slip means both more direct AND constant drive to the wheels

Should that be read as 'Stage two' or 'Stage eleven'?

'coz I'd love to see the results of stage eleven...
