Ford Australia is supposed to be making a huge effect on the number manufactured by ZF, so what will happen is still anyone's guess

And why the hell does anyone want anymore that 4 gears in an Auto with the amount of power the T's are pumping?

Do you want your Auto changing every 5 seconds ?

We have a good torque range from 2500 - 4000 RPM, what are you going to do with the extra gears ?

Make 1st lower ? YOu have a torque converter for that... You'll never get it off the line if first is any lower.

Fourth Gear is already high enough for good fuel economy and you SHOULDN'T be doing more than 150 / 160 KMH so who needs a higher top gear, so that only leaves making the box a closer ratio box.

With such a large torque range, why do we need a closer ratio box ? They will start getting slower down the quarter cause they will be spend too much time changing gears...

Just look at the 6 Speed Manuals in the T's. Are they any faster than the 5 speed was ? Don't think so.. Same issue 6 Speed in the C'Dore SS. Every motor mag that has reviewed one say "Waste of time, 6th gear ratio unusable"

Wait for the CVT that the Audi's have....

You will see these 6Speed Auto's making the Turbo faster.

While you have a valid point about the massive torque range, the more gears will allow the car to always run in the sweet spot (2,000-4500rpm). The 6 speed is also a completely different unit to the old BTR box.

The 6 speed Late model camira gearbox you have mentioned is only bagged out by drivers because the car sits at 2,000rpm @ 250km/h (j/k) this gear is so tall the motor just falls off the torque cliff. This is apparenlty not the case with the Ford T56's

l like the idea of a 6 speed auto in a Typhoon, that's one car l would consider over a manual. l hope Ford have the box well sorted, it must be quite complex. l can only imagine how the average Ford Dealers gumby mechanic would go about resolving any issues :spoton:

True, as most of the 5 and 6 speed autos have dual gear clusters, so they don't actually change gears, but rather select the next gear then detach drive from gear cluster one, and engage gear cluster two, at which point gear cluster one changes up or down to the next gear, awaiting the next change, which is done by dis-engaging gear cluster two and engaging gear cluster one.

Makes the changes quicker and much much smoother, but at a price.. More weight in the box...

With these "Performace" cars pushing close to 2Mg (2000 Kgs) we should be putting them on a diet, not making them heavier..

My 5 Speed Manual pretty much is always in this sweet sopt, apart from getting off the line, so I don't see the drama...

Only advantage would be if the tune them to a narrower rev range to improve power output and economy.....

Actually the ZF is supposed to be a very compact design with fewer moving parts, and may be up to 15kgs lighter than the BTR.

The main reason Grass is that those of us who understand that stock is boring will use a lower rear gear set & therefore much more vroom

Much more "smoke em up" I think.

If you go much lower in first with an Auto (either dropping the ratio of first, or the diff ratio), you won't be able to launch it... There is only sooo much traction on a set of street tyres.....

Besides that, Rock Stock standard is not boring. Had far tooooooo many problems with Insurance companies in the past to even dream of going back to non-standard.

You might be getting away with it with insurance companies now, but wait till they get their heads around the new technology in another 12 or 18 months time....

You won't be able to get the modded ones insured for love nor money....

Been there before and it sucks....

She'll be right! I think the major bonus is the torque rating similar to the t56  :stirthepot: Lots of HP and less to wrry about!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The torque rating is much higher than a T56 ... makes the T56 look like a lawn mower gearbox ... these ZFs are behind engines putting out close to 1000Nm and in cars weighing 25% more than the BA range of cars.
