I've seen these pic's before, about 12 months ago in Motor Mag, their Pommy coppers but you would think they might be lurking around here somewhere by now.

Must admitt I thought it was a cut-n-dry topic. However like NSW, I think its only with fixed/mounted cameras they must display warning signs before the camera. If its a mobile camera, then they are only required to put up a "speed camera in use" sign after your've gone past the speed camera...

However, Im not 100% sure about Vic's laws in regards to the mobile camera's.

The funniest thing I've scene are the camera's watching the speed camera's that are being watching by another set of camera's!!! :afro:

Good examples in NSW are on Bell line of road (heading up out of Kurajong) and Woy Woy road (just before u hit the down hill run into Woy woy.) Must have been too many truckies with hacksaws out there... :tease:

Its not here. Third picture, check out which side of the road the cars are travelling on. This is an old pic from overseas somewhere.

This cameras have been used in europe for years. There is a site (dutch I think) devoted to them, and photos of the destruction of fixed speed cameras :)

(Best one was one on a safe country road, with no accident history - which was taken out with C4!)

The photos you have above are from Europe not Australia.

They are modified tripod mounted Gatso cameras. Big in the UK (although I dont think they use bins...yet).

Another thing they do in Europe is mount a car fog light aimed outwards a bit - and it is used as the flash for the speed camera mounted in the car. Interestingly, I saw a setup very much like this in Melbourne about 2 weeks ago.

In the UK they also put the Gatso cameras on tripods whihc means they can mount them anywhere temporarily as they arent big, and behind street poles and freeway signs is common. Its bad - they can put them about anywhere. All it needs is a wire running to their car. THey even resort to covering them with comouflage netting and putting them in bushes so you cant see them. Very dodgy indeed.

Before everyone goes "Phew its not in Australia" though, the South Australian Government passed budget for 1 trial bin mounted speed camera last year, so the police in SA already have one they are testing.

They arent impossible to pick though - there will always be a vehicle nearby watching the camera and it may even be connected via cable and supplying the power.
