I had the stock centre muffler reinstalled on Thursday - it was a bolt-out , bolt-in experience.

My initial reaction ?

I think it has lost something going back to stock, I certainly miss the aural pleasure especially when accelerating hard. I know noise is a bad thing but it can certainly add to the pleasure of owning a performance vehicle - one thing to know you've got 240Kw on tap, another to hear it ;)

On a good side I think the fuel economy has improved, was averageing 14.8l/100km without centre exhaust, back to 13.3l/100km but need to see if this is sustained over time. The other good thing is that the significant other who drives the car 95% of the time is happier - "I can't hear the exhaust anymore, isn't that better ?" :puke:

When cruising around the noise levels weren't significant - on cold startup the car sounded like it had a hole in the exhaust.

Guy I was dealing with at City Exhaust in Braddon indicated that this was a problem with the autos but not the manuals and that Croydon Racing had also experienced the same issues.

After Hammer007 being a DEAD SET LEGEND :hrmm: , he has leant me his straight through pipes (minus centre muffler) to put onto my car and try out. I owe you some beers mate!

I am going down to Gas Tune tomorrow, to do a before and after dyno run. Hopefully they will be open!

Cold start up noise doesnt worry me, all my neighbours hate me as it is! You get that, owning blown V8's.... :hrmm:

Recent 1500km loop through Victoria confirmed much better fuel economy with the stock exhaust.

Without centre muffler I was getting 14.7L/100km - with the stockk exhaust back in I got the average down to 12.4L/100km. Has crept back up a little with more city driviing but only to 12.8L/100km.

Both cases with K&N filter.

I have found this topic very interesting. After testing a number of xr6t's with the centre muffler removed I am now convinced that this mod makes little or no additional power over the stock system. The cars we measured without the centre muffler made approx 180 to 185Kw, I have seen better power from stock xr6t;s. The main restriction in the exhaust system is the stock cat,so dont waste money on this mod unless your after more noise.

I have been getting alot of request about the centre muffler removal and people not being able to see the pictures. I think they went with the old server.

Here is a new thread of the whole process with pictures.

First the original centre muffler is unbolted and removed.

Here is what it looks like.

As you can see the pipes are fully flanged and look factory. I had these done at Fastfit in Frankston. I spoke to one of the guys that used to work there and apparently they have done over 40 of these. Alot of people must be doing this.

I think it gives the car a great note , for those that want iot a bit quiter with less restriction than the origional muffler they are able to put hot dogs in the new pipes.

The price is around $150.

Hope this answers a few questions and explains whats involved.
