I wouldn't suggest just removing your centre muffler, been there done that. Power increase I would say is very little if any at all. The car will sound good under load but give it a free rev sitting still and you'll hear a very disgusting raspy crackly note. Due to the engine being a twin cam n/a this makes the exhaust note sound very average. Installing a hot dog or the like might change this though and prove to be a good idea. My suggestion would be get a hot dog and maybe get rid of the cat or go with the turbo system.

Well, I went for a single 2.5" redback exhaust keeping the standard cat. Changing to a 3" metal core cat made the biggest difference to the sound and performance.

Lots of people seem happy with their twin systems though, in the future if I did some more engine mods, I would look at getting an aftermarket twin 2.5" system, but at the moment I think I would lose too much back pressure. If I do anything else I would put a hotdog resinator on to replace the rear muffler, just to make it a bit louder.

Hey Guys thought you might like to see this...

My CAT has had a rattle in it for some months now... and it finally bugged me enough for me to pull out the section of exhaust to see what it was.

After removing the CAT Section, I turned it upside down then turned it the other way and some stuff that's similar to wall insulation fell out...

Baffled by this, I looked insidethe CAT and noticed the honeycomb was moving back and force inside the CAT. At this point I "banged" the CAT Section on the cement to see if anything else was going to come out...

To my HORROR :fool::nono::stirthepot: the Honeycomb shattered!...

The photo is the end result. It took me about an hour to remove every last piece from inside the CAT...

Now I'm looking for a replacement of sorts... anyone who can help me it would be great to hear from you... I defintiely need one before SUMMERNATS, as I'm entered in. I will be in Sydney tuesday and wednesday.... ANY HELP would be APPRECIATED....

Well, having just done this mod myself I thought I'd give some feedback from my perspective. I was paranoid about getting any drone at all, so opting for the hot dogs wasn't really a choice for me. And I'm VERY glad I did! :spoton:

The difference in sound, to my ears anyway, is stark - the car now sounds MUCH louder and I can only imagine how noisy it would be with straight through pipes. Having said that, I did also fit a 3.5" MetalCat at the same time, so that would also be playing a small part in the increase in exhaust noise. :spit:

Is it too loud? Well, maybe. It's certainly quite obtrusive on cold start, when the idle is a little high - the noise in the cabin is very noticeable. Once the car is warm and the car is idling normally, I have to admit that you can barely tell the difference from stock.

Under light throttle applications there is definitely more noise and it took some getting used to for me (I'm not into super loud cars any more!). Under heavier throttle applications it's very noticeable, but I do actually like that part of it - it definitely gives the car a more purposeful note, especially given its performance potential. :msm:

As for drone, I'm yet to take it on a long cruise/on the highway, but I don't expect any problems from what I have experienced around town. In short, my firm recommnedation based on my own experience is to have hot dogs installed and not straight through pipes, unless you like a very loud, attention grabbing car. :fool:

How much did it cost you Bugster? Did you change the big oval tip to twin tips and did you get twin dogs?

This is my next money spending adventure (after service) and I want an approx $$$ value that I'm up for.

Cheers :spoton:

Skooby, just doing the centre section is a relatively cheap exercise. I paid $240 for the pair of resonators (installed) and I don't think that that was a bargain by any means. Straight through pipes would obviously cost a fair bit less. Pretty good BFYB IMHO. :spoton:

I didn't change the oval tip either, I am going for a stock look.

I also paid an extra $180 to have the MetalCat installed, but that included having a y-piece inserted to mate the 3.5" outlet on the cat to the twin 2.25" stock zorst.
