this is my only my personal opinion, but I think the xr6t sounds best with just a metal cat mod only, and then edit it, if it is just for noise only, well removing the centre mufler will give it noise, but I don't realy like the sound, I cannot coment on putting hot dogs in place of the centre muffler, but I would expect this to sound better.

just remember the flow restriction it in the cat not the mufflers, so you will need edit if you do the cat.

Gday,

Can somebody tell me about this centre muffler, my cousin, who also owns an XR6T,  told me I could remove it but needed a chip to get the full benefit of the power increase, can I remove it and not have a chip?  will it run like crap or can I get it tuned as it is, minus the middle muffler?

Anybody who has any other tight arse mods like these I would be happy to hear about :)

Wes - gold coast

Ive heard a few XR6T with the hotdogs in and straight threw pipes

and I think it sound alot better. if you drive normal you wont really notice it

much but when you give it a squirt you can hear it alot louder I like it.

obviously its not the restrive part of the exhaust but for sound it's not bad for

$$$$ im gonna get mine done soon.

if you wont power gains you just gonna have to get a edit and replace the cat

to a hiflow cat. :spoton:

Went to an exhaust place today enquiring about getting the centre muffler taken out of my N/A ute. The guy behind the counter said he would do it for about $100 but recons I would get a much better note spending money on a propper cat back system $450.

I havnt heard any XR's that have the centre muffler removed but this guy recons that most of the guys that have had it done at his shop have whinged about the noise and replaced the muffler or changed to the cat back.

Havnt made my mind up yet what I am going to do but in your case I think the stock centre muffler has pretty decent flow and wont give any performance gains. From what I have read here you really gotta do the intake + extractors + cat to get a decent improvement, then throw in an edit to extract the full potential out of your mods.

hmm, I wouldn't believe what he's told you... although an NA might be different? but I got my centre muffler removed and hot dogs in place, and it sounds sweet. Do a search on "centre muffler" and a whole heap will come up. I got a post in there some where with a video clip, as does bain.

Well like I said I havnt made my mind up yet. I would probably go with the hotdogs rather then a straight pipe to 'soften' the sound a little bit if I do decide to remove the centre muffler.

Oh man, I wanna do this mod sooooo badly, but I'm currently engaged in a long drawn out battle with the wife.  :stupid:

She is adamant that the car isn't gonna get any noisier, and I'm trying to persuade her that it won't be affected too badly at all (I'd have to go with hot dogs rather than straight through) unless you give it WOT, which she won't.

Hey Bugster - I just picked up a centre muffler section with Coby mufflers (the same as your hot dogs).

I fitted the section and then the next day took the family on a half hour trip - nobody noticed. My wife heard the car idling outside today (it was cold and the revs were up a bit) and asked what the noise was. But... it isnt that noticeable unless you are listening. It is louder under more throttle - but nice, not too loud at all. You get a nice little popping under deceleration.

Sounds great in the multi story underground carpark at work!

Overall - nice change, no drawbacks.

I was lucky to get a standard exhaust section with the muffler cutout and replaced with the cobys for only $100, so just a straight swap over, and I have my original as well. The mufflers would have cost more than that on there own!

Do it!!!
