I think she knew they were there. The fact her sister is married to a Balaniese guy seems a little convienient too, I recon the whole family is involved. The 60 minutes report tongiht shows they are all (especially the parents) are as dumb as 2 bricks.

Dazza.

When you look at your reasons why you are so outraged as to the verdict the you will realise the true reason as to why you are outraged:

You don't like their legal system and values therefore you believe your legal system and values are more superior - racism

You don't believe that cannabis trafficking is serious and deserves a long prison sentence - ergo your value system is better than the system in the country the offence occurred in - racism

That is a big leap there plonky.

Just because someone doesn't agree with some else's values doesn't make them racist - unless you believe that somehow the values they have are exclusive to the Indonesian race. There are plenty of non-Indonesians who support the sentence handed down, and I'd disagree with them too.

Anyway, your conclusion doesn't gel with your earlier statement...

Indonesia has a judicial system based upon what the Govermnemt want.  The system is INQUISITORIAL, same as in Italy, France and Germany.

... unless of course you are saying that I am also racist against Italians, the French and the Germans.

I'll happily argue why I think their values are out of whack, but its nothing to do with race.

Pretty much covers it....I find it disturbing that an Officer of the Law hands the "racist" tag out so quickly. This term is often incorrectly used to stifle further debate.

Well done :)

What I was alluding to was that in a country where tolerance and acceptance of other cultures has been mandated by legislation (Anti Discrimination Act etc) and anyone that professes to have an opinion other than that is intolerant and exhibits a racist overtone, I cannot believe the amount of rubbish that has been said damning the legal system of a sovereign country such as Indonesia.

The opinions stated by numerous people, in positions of responsibility, community leaders, normal average Joes and the media, is in direct contrast to all of the things that are preached towards Australians each year.

We can't be indoctrinated with one set of ideals but then say and do something completely different when a young attractive girl is charged with an offence in another country.

I don't know if she is guilty of importation. Only she know's that.

I think she got off lightly with a 20 year sentence

I actually think a 20 year custodial sentence for 4.5 kg's of cannabis is excessive however I still believe a custodial sentence is appropriate.

The offence occurred in Indonesia, she was tried and convicted in an Indonesian Court, and however primitive, backward, corrupt or unjust it is, that is the system they have in Indonesia.

For sections of the community to carry on about it the way they have and express some of the views they have about Indonesia, flys completely in the face of the multi-cultural indoctrination that has been pumped down our throats for the past 30 years.

It is also complelety irresponsible and foolish to compare the crime and sentence she has been given to the crime and sentence given to the spiritual leader of J.I. I know you didn't but I was also highlighting the fact that we, as a nation, should not apply the ideals and procedures to another country just because we think ours is better. That would be seen to be elitist, colonialist or imperialist.

My post was designed to make people think a bit broader about the whole issue and you have done exactly that :)
