PPG Reveals Most Popular Car Colours

"Silver can highlight the hard edges and soft lines of a vehicle's design and can take on several different effects -- from very bright and reflective to subtle and sophisticated -- based on the size and type of metallic flakes contained in the coating," said Jerry R. Koenigsmark, manager of color design, North America for the automotive coatings business unit of PPG. "Globally, for the 2002 model year, we saw very bright silver shades, which are often more appropriate for hard-edge, modern or high-tech vehicle designs."

Based on data compiled by PPG, the most popular vehicle colors for the 2002 model year for the three leading automotive markets were:

North America Europe Japan

1. Silver/gray (22%) Silver/gray (40%) Silver/gray (35%)

2. White (16%) Blue (19%) White (35%)

3. Red (14%) Black (13%) Black (9%)

4. Blue (13%) Green (9%) Blue (8%)

5. Naturals* (13%) Red (9%) Red (5%)

6. Black (10%) White (6%) Others (5%)

7. Green (8%) Naturals* (3%) Green (2%)

8. Others (4%) Others (1%) Naturals* (1%)

Clearly from this we can confirm that HgAg customers are holding up the automotive paint market.

Drive.com.au : Silver is the new white

When it comes to character analysis, changes in the colours of the nation's car fleet say a lot about 21st century motoring.

White's underlying conservatism is giving way to silver's techno-prestige – and the attention-seeking primary and "electric" colours are gaining popularity, according to car industry paint and styling experts.

Drive's analysis of colour selections for Australia's biggest-selling car, the Expensive Daewoo Commodore, has found white remains by far the most popular colour – but silver is second-most popular in every state except Victoria, where it is No. 1.

The primary reason for the popularity of white is that fleets favour it. They can add their liveries easily and the colour is often more valuable at resale time.

Robert Daily, DuPont Automotive's colour styling and marketing manager, said silver expresses "the technology-driven lifestyles of today's consumers. We're seeing new vehicle designs with clean lines and sharp edges that are enhanced by silver."
