Venom XR6 Member 1,460 Member For: 21y 10m Location: Geelong Victoria Posted 02/05/05 11:59 AM Share Posted 02/05/05 11:59 AM The cars continue to run coolant through the turbo after the engine is turned off to remove heat from the turbo so that the oil doesn't fry inside the turbine. Ford mentioned this when the cars were released and I'm suprised no one else was aware of this. If you listen closely you can hear coolant circulating for a minute or two after shut down. Maybe someone else has more information on this.

They have a new one on the way so that's good and told me to take it easy also I still have a bad miss on idle they put a new throtle body in but it didnt help not to happy..SO CHECK YOUR TURBO<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Chips,The turbo still keeps spinning for a short time after you turn the engine of and makes a bearing sound. That sounds normal to me. The miss at idle is more of a concern to me, as it would have nothing to do with the turbo.macka<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Not quite. The turbo keeps on spinning for several minutes at least after turning off the engine. You can have it spin almost 5 minutes.Ask anyone who has blown their output pipe off and then when they stopped raised the bonnet and watched the blades spin down There should be no real sound coming from the turbo at that time - certainly not something easily noticed. If you can hear it easily, chances are the bearing are on their way out. The bearings should only make noise at that time if they are incurring friction that they should not be subject to...a sign they are dying. As well as making noise, no doubt the added friction makes your bearings show down much faster. With a device functioning at around 100,000 rpm it takes almost nothing to have problems and as a result cause noise. And almost nothing to cause catastrophic failure. Either way, noise like that from something so amazingly well balanced and made to such incredible tolerances is a sign of something going wrong like a dodgy bearing or sludge starting to clog the bearing up.Id be interested to see if there is a trend for people hearing that noise to not let their turbo cool down for a minute (after spirited driving) prior to turning the engine off. Yes Ford have the syphon effect supposedly helping, but not so much as to properly cope with a fully hot turbo being turned off immediately. (You just have to see it glowing in the dark to know a little bit of syphoned coolant for a brief time wont do as good a job as letting it idle or some slow driving). It is more a sound like the Turbo doing its normal job - doesnt sound like a bearing, just a woosh as it spins down, and only for 5 seconds maybe?Like others say, If I drive the last little bit slowly, and give 30 seconds idle in the garage, I dont hear the Turbo at all (which I do almost every time). Now everytime I turn the car off and get out I can hear the turbo slowing down but it dosnt sound right to me, and I have never noticed it till now. I guess it sounds like bearings slowing down but not a smooth sound If you get what im saying

This can't be good for the turbo....I was so pissed off with this that I have stripped all the black paint off and it is now in bare aluminium (I polished it up a bit too!)Cutsnake
