For you aviation buffs. (From an old one)

A couple of memory flash's from my days of employment in and around the RAAF base at Richmond. (In no particular order)

1. Old Sabre jet breaking the sound barrier in a power dive.

2. Many visions of the old Vampire trainer jets.

3. The wonderful Mirage jets doing lots of high speed stuff.

4. Neptune bomber doing the jet assist take-off then high speed low level simulated passes with bomb doors open and sharp banking turns.

5. Many take-offs and landings and cargo drop runs from Hercs and Caribou.

6. Lots of Phantom stuff including a spectacular low level run, all dirtied up, nose high and high power, and flying bloody sideways.....Fair dinkum.

7. The first arrival flight of the F111.

8. Lots of USAF Starlifter stuff.

9. Caribou's landing in strong head and side winds.....bloody marvelous to watch.

10. The best. From the top level of the control tower, watching the take-off of a visiting RAAF Vulcan Bomber. Lots of noise and smoke. (I had a friend with lots of influence)

I see it weighed 400 ton on its first flight, water balast in the cargo hold.

And gee the old stuff, The RAAF Didn't have the Vulcan in service? I thought it was the brits who had them? They where a delta wing with 4 engines built into the wing right?

Rob,

The Sabre was at an open day at Richmond and yes...there was a lot of damage as I recall and there was never another sound barrier run done there. It was in the days well before the Mirage etc so the breaking of the sound barrier at an open day was a very big thing. It was probably around the late 1950's......... :crybaby:

The Vulcan. Yes, put in one too many "A"'s. It was a visiting Brit plane and yes, 4 engines and Delta wing. Big aircraft.

I hate to piss on this.. but its god damn disappointing how little innovation is coming through for air travel....

OMG LETS BUILD A BIGGER ONE! HOW INNOVATIVE!...

It's all done chasing the cheaper dollar so I guess that's fair enough... bleh

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thanks Biggles.... but what exactly were you expecting.... apart from possibly complimentary blow jobs in Business Class?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hahaha... now that's innovation! :D

ummm... I don't get the biggles reference though.. :spoton:

That guy on CNN was a pisser. He was interviewing the airbus test pilot about the takeoff and said

"so once they reach rotation point they pull back on that thingi-matjig (imatates a yoke)"

airbus test pilot "we have a stick."

reporter "ohh so you dont have one of those things"

pilot "no, we dont"

And another error I thought was funny was when the CNN lady said

" Boeing have comdend this flight a great success and are very excited about it"--gather she meant airbus.

The pilot landed I would guess about 4000 fet past the threshold markers but oh well, its a huge runway.
