In Australia it is exactly as Cro has said.

It has nothing to do with global Ford marketing or history. When the "new" sporting range of vehicles was introduced in 1992, (pretty sure it was '92 but may stand corrected on exact date), Ford Australia issued a press release announcing it was going to be called the XR range to commemorate the series that saw the first Aussie Falcon GT. That was the 66/67 XR model Falcon.

When the "barra" range of cars was introduced in 2002 everyone thought the base model was going to be a Forte. Ford had different ideas and issued a press release stating that to enhance the image of the Falcon range of cars as a car built on a long sporting heritage the name was to be XT, continuing the line of thinking and to capitalise on the successful XR range. Ford wanted to press home that there was NO base model in the Ford lineup and even the "cheapest" Ford was a sports bred machine.

The XT was of course the second generation of the Ford GT in 1968.

Hope this helps those Ford history buffs ...

It's a left over from the 1960's when all the car makers had to on-up each other, until the basic model was a Grand Luxary.

Then they shouldn't call the XR6 N/A a "XR" they should call is a XT+Extras :P. How is it performance isnt the engine the same as the XT?

Just asking... :)
