It was covered here ages ago...

When the GT was released back in the day it was part of the XR series.

Now all performance falcons are labled XR.

Rubbish.

Ford have used XR for all sorts of performance vehicles for ages. British have Xr3s XR4s Americans had Cougar XR7s in the 60s as well.

Ive always thought it was a kick back to the first real Ford Falcon performance car the "XR" GT.

Meaning that the car would have performance origins dating back to he XR. A cue that Ford wanted to to insert after the boring no v8 days of XF-to EA.

(But hey I could be totally off the mark or could be shear coincidence).

This is one of those burning questions... other ones include "What does GLi/SS/XT/MR/etc etc etc stand for...?"

They're letters :P I'm sure Ford marketing has come up with some drivel about what they stand for, and I would hazard a bet that the letters came before the meaning.
