So if you've had a bunch of deleted posts then those were not counted in the re-count. This "process" was just part of the standard upgrade from v3 to v4 of the forum content so that the post/topic/forum search indexing would be far more robust (and it is, you'll notice, if you've done any searching since the upgrade).
