Got to find my baseball bat and Rambo knife as heading to Pakenham to watch my son in some school function. Farking dangerous place Pakenham is, Paulie and Trainer live out that way. Goes to school St johns Dandenong and farking function is at Cardinia cultural centre. Sitting next to ex wife with the Missus, should be very interesting, maybe coax them into a 3some!

Tell me more about this unlimited bonus.

I'm always up for a good scam when it comes along.

In each financial year, for every $1 you contribute to the account, the Government will add an extra 17.5c. Once you contribute $5,500, the Government contribution maxes out at $935 for that year. You have to hold the account for a minimum of four financial years (so it's designed for younger people) so you can get $3,740. You can keep adding to the account and getting the extra 17.5% from the Gummbyment for as long as you want. The $5,500 max for Government co-contribution is indexed so I'm not sure if it will rise again in July.

Interest earnings on the account (does not include the Government contributions) are taxed at a flat 15% so if your marginal tax rate is higher than 15% (you earn over $37,500 before tax) then it is beneficial from a tax perspective to put in $5,500 in this instead of a normal savings account.

That's what I've been doing. Put in $5,500 and the Government adds $935 and then ME Bank pays me 5%pa on the entire $6,465 balance. Then, before December when I get my Annual Leave Loading, I'll add another $5,500 (or whatever it is). You could add $20,000 if you want, you just dont get any bonus.

To qualify:

  • You must be between 18-65 (if you reach 65, it gets added to your Super)
  • You must not have already bought a home (it gets complicated if you had a defacto partner who owned one, see a tax specialist in this case)

If you buy your home before the 4 years are up, you can choose to make a lump sum repayment off the mortgage after settlement or alternatively, transfer it to your super.
