I have had the exact same damage, but ages ago. When I first pointed it out, I was told I must have run over something liek a piece of flat metal that cut into it like a knife.

I wonder otherwise now...

5 out of 6 tyres so far have done it!! Ford told me the same thing!! I musta run over somthin!!! YEH 4 times!!!

Anyway 1 of the two new ones I got on the back done it as well, and I got my tyre place to look at it, he just said that it is normal and that it happpens alot with those tyres, but theres nothing to worry about! it's just where the tyre overlaps or sumthin he said and that he can garentee that it will never come apart!! Also those pics above of the splits are VERY MINOR to some of the splits I had in mine, I could fit a finger in one of my tyres it was split so bad!!

Yeah my previous ones were a lot worse...I just didn't have a camera at the time

I picked up the splits in these fairly early, they get worse with more kms.

Mine are donig that too - well one is. I was told not warrantable...

*shrugs* Not the first time a maker has passed of faulty tyres as being my responsibility to replace due to product defects.....

Not good form but what do we expect from a company that claims 100 cars only ever sufferered "Overboost"

Cro,

Same thing happened to all four on myn car,

went to my friendly Ford service Dept they then called the Dunlop rep.

4 hours latter I now have 4 new tyers and after paying a grand total of $44 for wheel alignment. (27k /km)

I was told the cases where faulty.

A few days ago I noticed splits across the tread of my rear tyre. As page 24 of our warranty booklet clearly states that tyres are covered by Ford warranty I thought I'd have no problems - my Ford service dept would change it for me (since it's a defective item). Well, surprise, surprise, they didn't want to know and told me to take it to a Dunlop tyre place and I'd have to pay pro-rata for my tyre wear. Not particularly happy with this response I phoned the Ford Customer Enquiries and they also told me to take it to a Dunlop dealer. When I asked the chap to clarify the page 24 information he told me that since the tyre did not have the problem when I bought the car I'd have to pay for the wear. I took it it to my local Beaurepaires and since the tyre only had minimal wear I didn't have to pay - but if I had a little bit more wear I would have!

My problem is what if another tyre develops splits? Do I have to pay for wear when the darn thing is a defective item and should be replaced by Ford? I have an extended six year warranty on my car and the argument the Ford Customer care guy used about the problem not being present from new is a bit of a concern for me!

Theres was acutally a recall on about 4 months worth of cars - Late 2003ish for this exact reason!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

No there wasn't. That recal was for cracks in the sidewall.

The problem we are talking about here are splits over the tread pattern.

Next time it happens get beaurepairs to pay you out for all of your tyres remaining tread and buy some other type of tyres.

Exactly what I did.
