Also try applying accoustic tiles or sheeting to the parcel shelf. I think much of the road noise in a falcon comes from that back area. Tyre noise is a horrible thing.. My brother had a LS400, and put performance tyres on the back, and jesus, its completely hidously noisey. Sounded like the dif had gone, whiney etc. And that's a top of the line lexus with awesome sound proofing. Tar spray will only really help wind noise etc.. tyre noise is a much stronger noise..
