We take another drive in Ford's V8-beating turbocharged six, now with six-speed manual gearbox, and savour BMW's M Sport-kitted mid-sized luxury sedan.

Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo

RRP $46,350

As tested $53,135

Extras: premium audio ($985), premium brakes ($2950), leather seats ($2495), metallic paint ($355).

Why we're driving it: The updated model has a six-speed manual. It was time to get reacquainted after last year's launch.

Likes: Awesome spread of power. The whistle from the turbo between gear-changes. Smoother shift and better spread of ratios make the most of brilliant 4.0-litre turbo engine. Superb ride. Ample grip. The blue instrument gauges. Comfortable and supportive front seats.

Dislikes: The steering wheel obscures some important dashboard switches. Vague steering feel on bumpy country bends. Premium brakes should be standard. Driveline clunks. Looks like a regular XR6 at a glance.

Would I buy one? Despite its foibles, in a heartbeat. Ford has the six market licked, Expensive Daewoo has the better V8.

Anyone here thinking the XR6T is perhaps by accident the best car Ford makes? Or a even bigger claim. The best car Ford Oz has ever made.

Except for the driveline clunk there is not a real single negitive comment. Brakes are optional if you want them (and if you don't you prolly have it booked in for aftermarket jobbies) and its hardly suprising it looks like a XR6. Steering is a tad light (seems very common though these days to all makes of cars).

Only real improvements to the XR6T I could suggest:

-6 speed auto

-ESP

-a tad more top end power

The brakes are adequate for their intended purpose. If you want to drive it at the track then go the premiums, its simple. Ive driven 4 occupants plus luggage down some windy mountains (Kiama, NSW) and didnt have any issues.

A 5spd auto would be fine by me. And it should look more different from the XR6.

I find the brakes to be adequate (XR6T). I like to give it some at times, but I don't drive like I'm racing all the time either. Never had a brake problem, even coming down some long mountain ranges.

The only problem I get is some screeching when applying them lightly. Not too bad though. I have a very late built mark I - I wonder if they changed the brakes/pads a bit?

XR6T, ummm. 20 trips back to the dealer, 53 days off the road, 41 things wrong, all in 19 months and 63,000km.

My mum told me, "if you cant say anything good about something, then don't say anything at all"

Therefore I'm not going to say anything.
