Well,

At the risk of tempting fate, leaving myself wide open to karma's wrath and being perceived as an absolute pr!ck, I feel I it is my duty to tell you all a little story.

Apologies for the length of this post, but details are required. If you want the picture only version, just scroll through and look at the pretty pics.

Some mates and I cruise along Putty road once every three months or so. The line-up varies from one quarter to the next, but I am pleased to say my T has always been present and has not failed to date.

Last Sunday's line-up consisted of:

Me in my Black T

Damo in his Citric NA

James in his V2 Series III CV8 Monaro

The plan:

Cruise from Windsor to the half-way house truck stop, get out and chat about leg 1 of 4, admire the bikes and think how fun Putty would be on a bike...eeeeexcellent.

Leg 2 being from the half-way house to just before the bridge at Bulga, a very twisty run through narrow cliff hugging roads.

Leg 3, leg 2, southbound.

Leg 4, leg 1 southbound.

That was the plan....now for a reality check...Putty has a history of killing cars amongst our friends, BEN189's VS did not get far late 2004, this time was no exception.

Leg 1 went as planned, very few cars on the Putty made it very enjoyable, overcast and just cool enough for the turbo to enjoy itself.

We stopped at the half-way house for the first time briefly.

I took off quickly, closely followed by the Monaro and CITRIC. We got caught behind a semi and an older model Falcon. I quickly disposed of these 2 vehicles and just assumed the rest of my party would be in toe when they got the chance...

I enjoyed leg 2 and arrived at the agreed meeting place, passed the Police station, watch that, 80 zone you know. I waited for a decent time, so much so that I began to worry. As I waited I saw numerous cars and bikes pass me, cars and bikes that I had overtaken and thought the other 2 would have passed also.

Colour me concerned at this point.

Some 15 minutes later, I see CITRIC's headlights approaching, with an extra passenger...hhmmmmm first thought was that James had stacked his Monaro, but no, Putty got the better of it and killed the clutch. No more clutch, OUCH!

james_driving.jpg

Tow truck was called, at least an hour and a half away...remember, Putty is in the middle of bumfcuk idaho, nothing around for miles.

Leg 3 saw an extra passenger for my black T. Upon leaving the dust bowl at Bulga, James simply said "I love this car". That's a quote.

Aaaanyway, moving right along, we hit leg 3 and that was fun. As we approached a crest, we saw a sorry sight.

Tow truck was still a way off, so we returned to the half-way house for a burger...tasty. Damo also considered throwing a few Litres of premium fuel into CITRIC, but thought better of it. Smart decision.

After killing some time, we all piled into the T and headed north for a second time to the stricken Monaro. I must say, Damo and I were very restrained, we could have made so much more fun of poor James and the situation than we did...hence this thread ;)

Waited with the Monaro until the towie came, he was wearing a Expensive Daewoo cap and made it clear he was not a fan of the common-day cars, especially the Ford variety.

Commence leg 4 - Traffic what sh!thouse. If watching his beloved Monaro get carried away was not painful enough, half way along leg 4, we came flying up behind the towie, James and I actually got caught behind this thing for ages, I mean about half an hour, the line of traffic in front of him was too long even for the T to get passed safely. So, there we were, sitting behind the Monaro, bouncing up and down on the back of a tilt tray. Got some killer footage of this actually.

Back to the shire for a BBQ and a few beers, was definitely called for. To end the day off, a $120 cab ride from Sans Souci to Normanhurst was in order, see, we didn't even drive him home, how slack are we???!!!

That's it guys, I hope you enjoyed it. No doubt you will have a little fun with this thread?

Great little storey.

I Love the Putty. I can picture myself in all those areas you describe.

But the Munro's clutch....?.....How did it destroy itself just cruising...? (OK I understand it was spirited cruising but....?)

Will let James tell his side, but apparently the replacement feels nothing like the old one ever did, even when it was new.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Multiple fingers on the pressure plate were bent. Given how incredibly different the clutch feels now compared to how it always (not just recently) felt on the Monaro, I am suspecting that the pressure plate was in a bad way for a while before it finally gave in on Putty. One (or more) of the fingers bent so far that the plate could not flex and disengage. All fixed within 24 hours under warranty, including a 150Km tow truck journey.

It wasn't even being driven hard at the time it went. There was no clunk, no bang, no nothing. Just all of a sudden when I went to shift from 4th to 3rd, I could not depress the clutch pedal. It felt exactly like something was preventing the cutch from operating, which turned out to be exactly the case.

T'was an awesome day. I actually felt really bad for James because it was a good day on Putty.

But being the one who pulled over in front of him (lucky we were in a place where we could do that!) after seeing his hazard lights on, I got to see him get out of the car, say :spoton: and slam the door shut. Then I heard the word "unbelievable" being said countless times.

Hopefully we have better luck next Putty. Until then... go the Falcons!

Jimbo, its just that the monaro has so much power. The Putty is scared of what the GEN3 does to it so it so it has put a curse on us.... :spoton:

Spewing I couldnt be there for you mate, it must have been hell coming home in the Fords :spoton:

There is a rumour that the clutch in those is prone to bending if you drive like a woman. Suggest you ask James whether that could be the case..... probably over the phone.....
