That would be YCL.

For 3k you can get some 330mm rotors with 4pot AP Racing calipers.

For 1.5k roughly you can get the premium brakes after market (same as premium but sold directly from PBR not FORD).

And for 3k you can get the factory premium brakes.

In order of cost and effectiveness there are the standards, then change out the front rotors for say DBA 4000 slotted and better pads (RB74 recommended) and fluid. That will cost in the order of $400 and will give more braking power and far greater fade resistance but with limited cold bite on initial application and the same pedal feel.

There is then the PBR upgrade which provides new rotors front and rear, braided lines and new callipers. However, only the front rotor and callipers are larger, the rears are as per standard but painted red. This kit can be bought and fitted for around $2000 (at least $1000 less than Ford premium brakes which are EXACTLY the same except they have Ford written on the callipers instead of PBR) and provides a much firmer pedal, no squeal, judder or fade together with sexy painted callipers.

There is the Ford factory fitted premium brake upgrade which exactly as above but lots more $$s.

Tnen there is the APR set up with larger rotors and 4 spot callipers on the front which are about $3200 fitted and feel much the same as the Premos/PBR with slightly more braking power evident on firm applications.

Finally for those with deep pockets and unlimited humour there are the Brembos which are absolutely top line and a replacement set of pads for the front are approx $1050 a pair.

So there's your choice.

In terms of bang for the buck you might consider either the PBRs or changing out the standard rotors for DBAs with decent pads and fluid. ie a cost of say $420 up to $2000 more.

Suggest if you want to retrofit Premium Brakes you contact MS700 (Mick) as he mentioned the other day about being able to source them at a similar price to the PBRs.

Also be aware that the rear Premium brakes are the same as standard except for the grooved rotor. Caliper is exactly the same.

Hi,

I'm considering another xr6t (had one b4 my STi) and am considering what options I would get. A big problem on my last T was the crap brakes, so I would probably get premium brakes. Ive been told these are just the blue FPV ones (not the brembos) and that they have larger slotted discs, hoever my questions are these any good? Are they worth the money? how much better are they than stock and are there any known issues?

Cheers.

I am very happy with the Premium brakes! They are awesome. I have over 300rwkws and they stop extremely well when they are called upon :) Well worth the extra $$$

But, you do pay a premium when they need replacing too. I had mine replaced at 37500kms, and it cost me $650/rotor (fronts) and $220/pad. that's what price my dealer quoted me, not sure if I could have got the exact same factory rotors for cheaper else where. Apparently, its normal that they last 35k-40k kms. Not sure if its an issue with you but thought I'd mention it anyway.

those prices are outrageous. I got a similar quote from subaru to replace my oem pads and rotors (Brembo brakes), but found it was MUCH cheaper to replace them with DBA 4000 rotors and Ferodo DS2500 pads, which are far superior and improved braking and reduced fade on the track significantly.

It is ridiculous that a car of 1.8 tonnes comes with the same brakes fitted to a bloody Taxi or the equivilent base model XT. We dont buy an XR 6 or 8 to drive around like grannies. It should be standard and it should be illegal to buy an XR without them.

Before any other option the p brakes are a must have. The most important option you can get. The standard brakes suffer significantly from brake fade even after only a few hard stops. This is why all NSW police vehicles, fords only, from base XT to XR8, all come with the p brakes.

are you sure? I was told to fit P-brakes you need the 18" wheels, and I have never seen a cop car with 18"s. All the HWP cars out my way (XR8's, XR6T's) have standard rims and unpainted calipers (the P-brakes are blue).

As above, you only need 17's. I have premo brakes with 17" rims.

You do need an alloy spare though.

Premos (PBR upgrade) from BCL with Ultimates - sensational overall package, lots of cold bite, no judder or squeal and yet to achieve any sign of fade and all up around $2000.
