Hey guys,

Just got a new mkII xr8 4 days ago and noticed that its got a really high pitched whine in between 80 - 100km/h. Its only got 400km on the clock and this whine is very frustrating seeing alot of the highway cruising is done at this speed. The car is fine with no whine below this speed however, after going to 100 and back down again it whines at the lower speeds. I think its to do with the diff not being oiled properly or the teeth not gripping? Is this a common problem and will the dealer know what to do? If so what will the dealer do to rectify it?

Cheers,

Dave

Mate your dealer will most probably replace your diff... Mine was replaced for it... and guess what... my new diff has whine much worse then my original diff  the car also vibrates at certain speeds.... went and got a wheel allignment/balance done as thought this might of been the issue (3 days after diff swap). The vibration is still there So I think I the new diff is causing it.

Good luck mate

Sorry to be the one to break it to you DaveO, but that’s one of the complimentary extras that allot of people get with a new falcon.

I myself am on diff no. 3, had it for almost one month and its beginning to whine like a b!tch already. Several members here are on their fifth and sixth diffs, there was talk about getting your dealer to specifically request a higher grade diff from the manufacturer but any of the local service managers that I have spoken with know nothing of it and couldn’t provide anything more than just another one off the shelf.

So anyway, getting to the point - just buckle your seat belt and get ready to ride the warranty replacement rollercoaster. Get it inspected ASAP as it will definitely get worse, and as Jetute mentioned it will get to the stage that you think all of your tyres are out of balance and alignment because of it. My second diff was at the stage before the last replacement where the whine transformed into a howl that even the stereo had trouble drowning out.

There is a substantial lead time on replacements (I.e. 8 weeks was my last wait) so get your name on the order sheet as soon as you can. Sorry once again, as I’m sure no one wants to hear this about their new pride and joy.

Trent.

ok thanks guys. It is bad news...

Do you know of anyone who has had success with a replacement diff? Surely all the original diffs arent faulty after a month or so of driving with them or else ford would have a major recall on its hands.

No there is no absolute fix, just pot luck - if you are lucky enough to get a decent replacement then hold on to it.

There is no point issuing a recall as far as Ford is concerned as they are yet to find the solution, which I suppose you really need to do a recall!

Diff whine here between 90-100kph. Starting to get a little worse after 18,000k. Also whines at low speed when cold and the driveline shunts like a b*tch at low speeds when warm! :nono: I've chosen to live with it at the moment after hearing that some are on their 5th/6th diffs with no improvement! :nono: Enjoy your new ride nonetheless :pinch:
