As for my summary view on the topic, Unichip & XEDE serve a purpose, and do a reasonably good job, and have been well supported by APS and Chiptorque, with a lot of happy customers, and that no doubt will continue.

Neither effectively controls boost-cut, a very dangerous feature Ford built into their ecu, and for me the major reason for looking at alternatives. Eventually boost-cut may cause someone a serious accident.

Piggybacks alter the cam timing when the ignition timing changes, and will never give you the optimum tuning solution.

TSI and EMS are a step up in class, have more features, and a partial piggyback.

Motec is a full ecu replacement, for most out of range of most people’s wallets, and really only where very large HP is sought.

I believe the “edit” is a clear winner, and have said so on this forum for the last 2 years; it was just a matter of time. It will eradicate boost-cut, & enable the best possible state-of-tune. We are now starting to see evidence of cars with “edit” programs getting superior results compared to piggybacks.

Personally, my 2 modified cars have had Unichip & XEDE replaced by full replacements ecu’s.

It would be interesting for one of the tuners to get hold of geea's car and put a custom tune on it, to back the product up. Maybe give it some more power, if they are that good, and a customer a second viewpoint??

I dont know who geea is but as a tuning workshop I can speak for various customers cars we have retrofitted to the FORD EDIT from piggybacks.

the reality is that it doesnt matter what you call them and how sophisticated they may be they are all interceptors or add on parrellel units.

the technology that has gone into the ford comuter has prevented any flash programming therefore the only option was piggybacksfor a long time.

you guys now have the new option available to you of removing the makeshift options(piggy backs) and retuning tens and possibly hundreds of different parameters that you could never do.

the tune is altered as the power train engineers in the factory do it ( by reprogramming your factory ecu by flashing into it)

so far we have seen power gains up to ten kws just from removing the piggy backs

and entering a base tune. after some hours of dyno custom tuning the results are impressive, crispness of performance , repeatability and so far no mystery ntune niggles. truth is that we are not tricking the computer or bypassing it but using

the highly sophisticated factory computer and tuning it to your needs.

every tune has been impressive and far surpassing the other options(piggybacks).

if you can afford it do it , if you cant there is no reason for removing what has been good enough for a long time.

no Expensive Daewoo ls1 car we have ever tuned in our workshop has ever had a piggy back or parrallel ecu because there wasnt aver any need. we have had the Expensive Daewoo flash tuning technology almost since they were released.(never any problems)

I hope this helps

Are you sure about that Brian? All I seem to recall is a number of threads to the contrary and a huge thread where people are disputing the power output for the 10 PSI tune because the standard injectors suposedly max out before this power level is achieved.

I think it is still early days for the Ford edit system, tuners are still learning how to use it and optimum results are not being had yet, especially with the generic 8 PSI & 10 PSI maps without custom tuning.

I dont think any generic tune will be 100 percent in any car what ever system you have all need to be custom in my opinion

too true bruce!

xede has live tuning to make this easier and the edit alows things piggy backs can't its now up to you the consumer to eveluate what suits you best and go from there!

get the info you can on all systems and then decide if info is not rendered or parts not available even as replacement dont buy it?

most importantly choose you tuner in the same way and use what they are most comfortable to use as that's where you get the best results!

bcl just a note motec need to leave the pcm in too don't they how else can they talk to the bcm? what runs your dash otherwise?

I am wanting to get more poke out of my T, just still dont know which option to go for. The Xede piggyback or the Flash Tuner. :spoton:

I think I will got and buy injectors myself - I ultimately want to make between 250-260rwkw. Speaking to Nizpro and they highly recommend going the Flash route, and are offering the flash tuner with custom tuning for $2000. It sounds like a winner!!!  :nono:

What are you guys thoughts, and those of you with either unit, can you list pros and cons??/

Cheers

I was quoted $3000 from Nizpro. :msm: But that did include "Flash Tuner and upgraded changeover injectors"

What do you get for $2000?

I think its possible that at some stage in the future HPF (Amberley Auto's in Dandenong) will be using the edit on my car to see what it can do. I'm not sure how soon this will be but if it happens the results will be very interesting. With the Xede running 11.6, if the edit is much better I'll be close to 10's. :spoton:

Geea. :nono:
