As a side note, I guessed that it would be around 25Watts or so a channel, so if its aroound 35 I'd be stoked.

Can't answer your queries Lumpy (same boat as Mondie). However I can honestly say I have never heard a monster sound system that only pumps out 25 watts per channel. I mean serious sound starts at 75 wpc. :spit:

Nah, Redhawk this one isn't intended to be a monster stereo.

The one I have currently run's Dual 12" Woofers, a 14" Ross Exponential Horn Piezo and 450Watt RMS a channel (at 4 ohm). It's pretty serious bit of gear. The boxes stand chest high! :msm:

Biggest trouble is the amp is not really a HiFi amp (though it does admirably well) and the speakers just lack a bit a low volumes. They're more suited to 120Db with 20mm travel on the woofers cranking out some 'Chemical Brothers' or 'Cosmic Gate' rather than listening to the '1812 Overture' whilst enjoying a cider :spit:

I'm at the mates house now...Photo's will shortly follow. :gooff:

makes my TS-SR 701 E onkyo sound pov :spit:http://www.onkyo.net/uk/cms/products/home/av_rec/TX-SR701E/

I would love to have a room just for music, pure two channel, no kids, but $$$ and house dont allow it, so the 701 and some DB dynamics 488 polaris fronts, 12" 250w sub (DB) and DB surround pack make up my home theater/music area, now I want a neat CD player, wall mount that you can see the CD's running around, saw one once in Germany a few years ago, a Bang & Olufsen, but the 4000 euro sort of threw me.

Sorry I cant help with the valve job, before my time.

That's better!! :nono:

Although I have heard amps 'rated' at 150 watts rms that would destroy heavy duty speakers.

But then I'm into quality not quantity. :spoton:

And anyhow what's wrong with listening to a bit of luvverly, luvverly Ludwig van with a cider or two! :stupid:

Well that's the point Redhawk...I want some quality setup now for home and reserve the quantity 'Speakers of Doom' used for pesky neighbours and the like :msm:

Nothing wrong with the 'Van' at all, but I can really enjoy it without shaking the bottle out of me hand :ermm:

That's a real nice receiver you have there Eugene, I have read and heard a little of Onkyo and it has been all good :msm: . I'm not much into Home Theatre I must admit (I think the only thing 6.1 is good for is hearing where the bullet's are coming from in Battlefield 1942)

The Amp I'm using is a Behringher EP1500 amp, which is designed for P/A work but is also a real low distortion, Class AB power amp and I know it's capable of 1500WRMS in mono. Even then I think the speakers would Clip the amp first before they were overdriven.

When I find out about the amp, I will be building my own speakers to match. I'm planning around a setup using Peerless Drivers, probably a 6.5" or so driver and horn loaded tweeter. The fun part will come in the box, I am going to try that Wharfdale setup of curved sides, to kill standing waves. They will be for good music reproduction (next step, good Source) not for volume. I already have my 'Speakers of Doom' for that.

HOnestly Lumpen, save yourself the heart ache of building speakers that you think sound good. You will try and convince your self for ages that you have done a good job and they sound good. One day you will realise they don't...........( I have 4 times)

I have spent years studying this with none other than neville thiel, and I don't even bother building my own speakers, its to much trouble. Buy a good set of reputable speakers, if you want a hand I can audition unlimited speakers in a price range and give you an opinion, lol.... or sell you one of the 4 pairs I have built over the years.........

Lastly, and more importantly than your speakers or amp.... your room.... If it's no good (acoustically) then nothing will sound good in the room.

Anyway I am looking forward to seeing the amp.. I hope its a lost gem and you can make it sing.

cheers

david

Nyopa,

Way to burst my bubble

Hmmmm, maybe you can audition some Grande Utopia's and some Nautilus 801 Signatures for me Please...

Though my price range is more 25 year old sanyo speakers from an Op Shop, with complimentry Reel-to-Reel of course  Seriously, I don't think my price range would extend much past the cheapest 'name' Bookshelf's, at best

Maybe something along THESE or THESE? I don't know.... :pinch:

Even IF the speakers are top notch, the room is not a specialised 'listening' room, it's a ruddy great room with high ceilings, wooden floors and LOTS of glass louvere's etc.

Cheers,

Lumpy

PS:I'll get these pic's one day soon too :nono:

As a side note Davidi (Nyopa) were you studying speaker design with Mr Thiel or something in an audio related kind of field? Working out paramenters or something?

I know most of the main parameters are called...but what the hell they actually ARE

Oh Red, I totally understand that, but for some reason, when neighbours from 6 house's away interrupt my listening and I answer the door naked they seem to be acutely angry and/or distressed in some way.

True Story: On my 20th birthday PLEASE REFER THIS THREAD we had the music up loud enough that the next door neighbour came round to complain at 10 (Which is 30 mins before local excessivenoise by-laws) and after banging on the door and screaming my name, she finally had to come up stairs (about 15 mins later) and tell us off IN MY f*ckING LOUNGE ROOM. Tell ya what, it was going OK til I decided to point the smoke machine at her.... :pinch:

speaker design... with all the bells whistles and paramaters you can poke a stick at.

The links you posted went to a Behringer website?? is this right?

I would suggest thet are not the best speakers (at any price) for your amp.

PM me with a price range if you have one.. and the pics of your amp and I will see what I can do. I will see if anyone has the speakers so I can have a listen to them.

Grande Utopia's and some Nautilus 801 Signatures

Some simple advice from an old audio head.... save up for the best you can get, because long after the price is forgotten, the quality will remain.

cheers

david
