Auto times?

I am looking at buying the BA XR6T, and am deciding between the auto or the manual. I currently have an AU XR6VCT with an auto and was really keen on the manual (don't like my auto), but since I drove the BA with the sequential auto now I'm not to sure. It was really nice. I have spoken to several different Ford people and no one can give me a torque rating for the 5 speed manual and/or the 4 speed auto. This is important to me because I plan on modifying the car, and want the strongest box.

Also, I can not seem to find any times for the auto XR6T yet, only the manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Taken from the Ford Brochure it states:

450Nm@2000-4500rpm for the Barra 240T

I know how much the engine puts out. But I want to know how much the gearbox can handle. The manual is the old one from the AU XR8 which used the have 435nm I think. But no where can I find the actual ratings of the gearbox's. Its no good having a modified 300kw XR6T if the gearbox can only handle 240kw reliably then blows up. Gearbox torque ratings. I think I need to contact the manufacturer.

Ford have said they (BTR) beefed up the T5 for the Turbo much as they had done previously for the 220kw 5.0 litre. They say 450NM is it's max. You'll have to go the auto if you want to safely handle over that. The auto has plenty in reserve apparently and should be superb behind the turbo - it is the only time I would consider an auto above a manual.

Some writers have put the autos times a half sec slower to 100kph - but I don't think they've actually tested any. I would imagine a diff ratio change to 3.73 in the auto would see it doing equal or better times than the manual.

Remember also these testers are used to extracting best times from cars and don't mind flogging the sh*t outa them - most owners would not repeat the times given - with autos it is a different thing, and on the road I reckon it would have to be a very well driven manual to beat the auto.

Thanks, looks like the auto it is then...I tried changing the diff ratio in my AU from 3.45 to 3.73 but nobody would do it. All sorts of reasons why, but I tried about 8 places! Anyway, thanks.

Btw. My AU XR6VCT is for sale if anyone is interested.

I'd certainly pick the auto.

No on & off the throttle while you run through the gears. Thus the turbo is kept on full boost. Let the torque converter do it's job I reckon.

With sequential shift what are you sacrificing?

You wanna play boy racer through the twisty stuff - knock the lever to the left and go right ahead. Stuck commuting in city traffic, you have a normal auto box that's best for that.

If your still not convinced the manual probably isn't as strong.

Yes it does break like a manual box. I was driving a Fairmont Ghia the other day and tried it.....it works great. The only gripe is that there is no red line on the taco. Other than that best of both worlds with no clutch. :D
