Had the same thing happen just once - the DTE readings were in line with the fuel guage indication - ie as the guage slooowly rose towards full so the DTE reading slooowly increased. It took over 100km before the guage settled - as it only happened once I haven't bothered about it but have advised my son of it, and he will watch for any recurrence and have the sender replaced if necessary.

Len, I'm just curious. You said you filled your tank up the first time and it took nearly 2 hours to steady out the gauge.

Did you fill your tank up from completely empty? or was it half full?

Reason I ask is that if you do not put a lot of fuel in the tank, (ie only 1/4 of a tank etc) then the fuel gauge is very slow to reflect this change as it thinks the small variation in fuel level is just due to the fuel moving around in your tank, and not actually due to it being filled. If the gauge wasnt designed like this, then everytime you went around a corner and the fuel moved about it would send your fuel needle swinging around from Empty to Full! The DTE should also increase slowly too in line with the fuel gauge.

So people are having the old faulty fuel sender problem again aye??

That was a common problem on the au series and I'm surprised that Ford hasn't been able to come up with a solution on it.

The problem is caused by the quality of fuel put into the tank, there is a chemical (not ethanol, maybe sulphur) which is in the fuel, and causes havoc to the sender unit. Obviously we don't have x-ray vision and can't really tell whats in the fuel.

I hope I made the problem sound a little clearer

Ok, can you believe this...

After 10,000k's mine has started to do this!!! I just filled up (Optimax as usual) and started to drive on the freeway... I looked down, shook my head, looked again.. and yep... only half a tank?? What the....

I pulled over because I thought that I left the cap off, and spilled half a tank of fuel out during the last corner... No so!

Anyway about one and a half hours later it read close to full.

It's only happened once, however I'll be adding this to my long list of problems

Almost at 17K and mine has just done this today for the first time.

Filled it up and have only driven about 10 kays but the fuel gauge is showing just above 1/4 (was getting close to empty when I filled it).

Lucky I'm going to my dealer for another issue on Friday - can add this to the list.

Guys,

I have a theory on this issue.... so sit back and relax and let me take you on a little trip.. :hrmm:

While on the big lap (total distance 20,000KM and 30,000L of fuel) I did not have any issues with dirty or crappy fuel. While heading out of Perth heading east I needed to fuel up. Just before pulling into the fuel station (Mobil) I receivde a phone call (on the hands free set in the car). It was for the wife and was an important call so I pulled up to the station and left the ignition in accessories and not off (as per usual). I hear you say that is not a good idea etc.. (Yes know) But anyway.

After filling up I left the station to notice that the fuel guage had not moved and the DTE was up the creek as well. After 200Ks it was about where I expected it to be.

This has only happened once and only once in the 12 months I have owned it.

So my theory is that: Did the fuel sender get confused as the car electrics was still "on"and stuff things up.

Even if I stoped and turned the ignition to Off and back on again it would not come right. :hrmm:

It "could" be the cause of the once off nature of this issue. Have any of you that have seen this possibly left the car on acc so others can listen to the radio / CD or open windows etc (Yes I know the car has a keyless radio system)...

My 2c....

The only time it has happened to me I had the missus in the car.

I dont leave the keys in (even if shes in it) but I probably would have turned the stereo back on manually while I filled it.

Good theory, I like it. I wouldnt have even thought of that.
