Time to build a new computer.

I'm doing it the easy way tommorow....heading down to Hardly Normal and wackin a laptop on 20 months interest free..

That'll make it time to pay just in time to upgrade..

Can someone point me in the direction of a site or program that tells me what each process is doing in the processes tab in the task manager on my computer? I seem to have allot of sh*t going on and firefox sure does use allot of memory

I'm sure there are programs/websites devoted to it, but the easiest solution is to google the full process name (including the extension). Doesn't matter how obscure somebody somewhere will have a full explanation for it.

Before you get too involved with windows processes, a good place to start is by looking at your Startup in your System Configuration. You can get to this by typing MSCONFIG in the run dialog box. Look at whats in the Startup tab, and compare these to the website http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

This is a good website that is updated regularly. It will give you an idea if the program is a trojan or not.

If you want to take the next step to decide what process is worthwhile running or not, you could check out

http://www.tasklist.org/

If these are trojans, or viruses, it may be difficult to remove, if they keep reappearing after a system reboot, you could run REGEDIT from the run dialog box, do a search for the EXACT process name or startup item, and delete any key that contains this.

Just a hint, be very careful playing around with reg keys, could cause you more trouble if you delete the wrong key.

Get a program like System Mechanic or any other program that has a startup manager as a part of its' suite. A startup manager just disables the "run" function of that process when Windows starts.

You can disable a lot of processes like "auto update" files that do nothing but stay resident in memory until a set time to check for updates which is a waste of system resources.

Disable everything that you don't need and re-boot the computer.

I would not recommend this to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing. The fact that xr6 typhoon is asking what the processes are would be good enough reason for him not doing it.. No offence xr6 typhoon OK.

no offence taken mate. I'm hopeless when it comes to these thinking boxes. My computer takes a while to boot and I'm sure its because all these programs are running on startup. I just wanted to tidy that up. I'm waiting till end of july then upgrading anyway

Guess this is the place to ask.

I want to make an animated gif for a avatar from a avi file.

What programs do I need, one I assume to split the avi into frames, then I guess pick out the frames I want and then compile them in a gif animator prog?? I'm fine with computers, just dont do anything with media on them.

you can get avi to gif "converters" or for what you want to do you need a avi to jpg or gif non animated converter which will put all the frames in a folder as pictures then use some sort of gif compiler to make an animated gof, I did this years ago by using a prgram I found on a PC magazine CD. you can get these programs off the net I'm sure but you may be limited to what you can do with them unless you give them some money to activate the "pro" version or the ones you get for nothing are plagued with spyware, adware , ect. Perhps someone here can do it for you.

To capture the frames from the avi you could just try pressing the print screen button on your keyboard then open MS Paint and go paste crop and save it as a jpg or bmp. Keep doin this to get all your still images then use a gif89 or animated gif program to join em.
