HI Everyone

I have a HP IPAQ 4150 and was wondering if anyone else was using this type of setup in their T's.

Basically I am after any feedback you can give me on what to get (or not to) and any extra's you think are valueable.

I don't want to walk around with it, just have the reciever mounted in the car somewhere.

thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

cheers

David

I have had the Navman GPS4410 with my iPAQ h6365 for nearly two months now. Works very well. Although my Windows Mobile device is a little slower to conserve battery life compared to other handheld CPUs, it should fly on a h4150.

Quick rundown of how mine is setup:-

I currently use velcro to mount iPAQ on the dash, located between the instrument panel and the centre console screen. That way you can glance at it without the need for any head movement and it's easily accessible to your left hand to use the touchscreen. Power is supplied by the iPAQ car charger cable for the moment, but I will wire up a more permanent solution sometime soon.

The GPS4410 has a little sunction-cup mount that you can place anywhere on the windscreen. I mount mine at the top of my windscreen above the rear mirror, gets good reception from there (7-8 satellites usually) and it doesn't come into your field of view unless you specifically look at it. I don't use the supplied car charger cable because the cable is too short and it won't charge the batteries inside the unit while connected. So I use three AA 1800mHa NiMH batteries, which have great battery life and are rechargable.

On a side note, I also have a bluetooth car kit installed. It is possible for you to route ALL audio through the car kit if you want to put up with the GPS software interrupting your stereo constantly while giving directions. I prefer to let the iPAQ use it's own speaker for those sounds and only have the car kit cut in only when the phone is in use. Depends if you want to use your PPC as a car MP3 player as well....

Takes a little while to get used to navigating the software with your left hand, but aside from that it works really well and I'm more than happy with it. The female voice prompter is such much better (and sexier) than the softer male voice with it's woeful british accent. The best feature is the automatic re-routing capability, just awesome!

I do have a few minor issues though:-

- Documentation is pathetic and a waste of paper. NAVMAN Europe have a great FAQ section that answers most of my questions, but it took me days to find it!

- There is no desktop software feature to allow you to plan trips (something Destinator does very well)

- The trip tracking feature is just plain awful and completely useless as they don't supply you with any software that can use the tracking data (a feature I love from Magellan)

- I had problems navigating through Canberra without constantly looking at the map screen to see where I supposed to be going. Either the software or the map data being used seems to have problems interpretting how to navigate the larger-style roundabouts that are in our nation's capital. Very weird.

- Current map data is from March 2003 and the 2005 update wiil cost $179 early next year.

Other than that, it is a very solid product at a good price. I would recommend you wait until the new map data comes out early next year before buying it. You might be able to persuade Navman to give you a free map update if you ask them, but I doubt it.

If you want to see it in action, just drop me a PM or meet me at the Mt Annan Shopping Centre early Saturday morning before we head south to invade Tasmania for a week. :smilielol:

Nyopa I am running Co Pilot live on my Ipaq and have been for about a year now. It is pretty good as I travel interstate for work and I just load my client details before I leave.

I have it permanently mounted on the dash in a powered cradle, connected to aux input of the stereo so I can listen to it if I want to or just have the radio on and follow the on screen directions.

I have a bluetooth GPS receiver mounted in the dash under the passenger airbag cover as the ute doesn't have a passenger airbag.

It is powered by the cradle as well. I will take a couple of pics tomorrow if I get a chance.

Sounds like a good setup, does the passenger airbag cover just pull off or are there screws?

If you're after proper mounting kits, I can highly recommend Arkon. They have a great range of powered PDA mounts that can be installed a number of ways - fixed, windscreen suction cup, vent mount, cup holder or multi-angle adhesive pads.

I sell the navman range and think they are an excellent product. you can get various kits to suit pda's. if blue tooth compatable, you can mount the reciever under the dash & mount the pda whereever u like, range of about 8-10 metres. or you can connect directly to your pda & have it portable, or navman also sell a dedicated pda to suit

one thing on a personal note, I hate drilling & cutting dashboards, so went to a little effort to mount my sat nav which is the icn 630.

I removed the tissue holded, mount a socket underneath it so it would not be visible & made some brackets to suit, so that I can easily mount or remove the unit & put it in any car I wish. just bent some 7mm hex steel & welded a ball to the end to make it removable & here are some pics.

first one is of the unit while it is mounted & in use
