"why build cars that can go 240 when you can't do that speed?"

well, I can and do..... 230 anyway.

I bet they won't make Jaguar Mercedes or BMW change thier speedos, it's fine when the mega rich buy cars capable of these speeds but if Joe bloggs can afford one, well, we've got to put a stop to that!

Actually your quote is NOT what he said at all. Nor does it mean what you have put. If you are going to debate the article or the statements in it you should get it right, otherwise the expression of your own point of view is flawed and wasted.

As for imports having to comply; of course they will, just as they do now. If this is passed into the ADRs every vehicle sold for use on Australian roads has to comply. The only exceptions are for very limited volume "special" vehicles. And they are only exempted if they are shown to comply fully with the design and safety rules that apply in their country of origin which in most cases (European) are stricter than ours anyway.

Look, I know Bracks is trying to eventually get limits placed on cars. He admits it and even says that this is the first step. But he is wrong if he thinks he can get this idea to lead towards his goal because there are a whole different range of arguments regarding limiting speed to just limiting speedometers.

It is about speedometers being limited to show only to 130kph. Go over that and you're just guessing. The idea is to remove young or inexperienced drivers from the temptation of testing their new speedrocket to see how fast it can go. I can actually see some merit in this proposal when applied to a single car situation. However it will not stop people from racing as such if there are two or more cars present.

turbo6man - Unless I have misinterpreted what was stated doesn't the following mean the 1st step is to limit speedo's showing 130km/h and then limit the top speed of vehicles?

Speaking on radio 3AW, Mr Bracks said the plan to peg speedometers was the first step in a campaign to impose a limit on the top speed.

"This is one anomaly really that's there - if you can't go at 240km/h, why have you got 240 on the speedo," Mr Bracks said.

:w00t2: There's always someone ready to pounce, fair enough then:

You are correct, I misquoted, lazy on my part working from a flawed memory, however I believe the initial argument I used is equally applicable to the correct Quote.

I can go 230 and I do go 230 and I like knowing how fast I'm going. I can work out travel time by knowing my speed. Changing my speedometer or me purchasing a car with a 130kph speedometer will not reduce the speed I drive at.

As for the second point My blue, I was unclear in my meaning

The debate over speed has been reignited by Ford Performance Vehicles' release of a turbocharged six-cylinder Falcon - the Typhoon - which is capable of well over 200km/h.

why blame ford? Why not mercedes or BMW or Expensive Daewoo for that matter? They have been producing cars capable of this speed for a long time. I suggest that it's beacuse cars like the T (with simiar top end performance) are now obtainable by the masses.

Good god man, you made me think, :msm: It's chitcat on fordxr6turbo.com

not a technical research paper!

Sorry mate, here, have one with me? :spoton:

PS I do agree with your points. Brack's is grabbing for any headlines that he thinks might make him popular. Pass the man a straw :tosser::spoton:

Where's that laughter coming from?Oh its just the rest of the civilised world on hearing about 130kph speedos and presumably followed by speed limiters.Even though you can drive from one side of Victoria to the other in about 20 minutes (and it has by far the best roads), this is a BIG country.

Open road speed limits should be going UP,not down.We now have a majority of cars on the roads with ABS,airbags etc which are far superior to the vehicles of thirty years ago when open road limits were 70 mph.My old man bought a 68 XT Falcon brand new when SA had no open road limit at all.It did 98 mph flat and we did that regularly from Pt Lincoln to Adelaide.

Sure theres a lot more people on the roads now,but I can,t see any steps forward in this latest quest to paint the world beige. Its not the cars that are the problem, its the drivers.Advanced driver training courses for everyone including my grandma and Bracks. If they can't cut it:catch the bus :crybaby:

While I,m still on my soapbox(yeah rant rant)There are people out there with drivers licenses who barely operate a can opener, have the IQ of a retarded wombat, can't see their own hands in front of their face or are total psycopaths.

The laws, as usual cater for the lowest common denominator.A car is the most complicated device some people will ever use (and just like any other piece of machinery,)some are good at it,most are average and some should never be allowed to drive. :w00t2:

Advanced driver training should be mandatory.I resent my civil liberties being threatened because irresponsible and incompetent drivers are allowed to hold licenses. :crybaby::w00t2:

I.m happy to pay the government for an advanced driving test if it removes the less than satisfactory drivers from the roads.

Raise the open road limits, ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars :w00t2:
