Brakes scraping

When using the brakes to slow down the T (duh), I get a scraping kinda noise from the front of the car.

Apon closer inspection of the front disc's, both have about 10mm of damage to the outer edge, and it is getting worse. the rears are fine.

this sound only started about a week ago, was quiet and occasional to start with, now it does it every time.

Does anyone know what this problem is? I have read about brake shudder and handbrake scraping, but is it ether of these?

I will take some photo's now for you guys. Cheers

BTW: I have premo brakes.

Scraping from the brakes? Hmmm... for a minute I was going to suggest that the accidentally fitted your handbrake to the front wheels...

 That reminds me, must ask them to fix the shoosh shoosh for the third time when it goes in for a service in a couple of weeks.

well at 32000 depending on your driving style, they just may well be worn.

Which brakes do you have on it? stock or premium?

I don't know if you thrash it or not, but I have to ask this. Are you a late braker or do you brake early and evenly for most stops?

Harder braking is what wears pads, soft consistant braking simply heats them up without actually 'sanding' the pad away. Brake pads are infact fairly difficult to wear away without allot of preasure.

Also, do you normally do city or highway driving, towing, or have occupants in the car?

It all contributes and if you constantly have a little bit of extra weight in the car then your driving style (late braking, or early constistant) will be exaggerated.

Anyways, this is how I see it.

Premium package, you are looking at 50, 000km before you get to the safety mark on the pads if you are fairly spirited in your braking.

extend that out to even 100 000 if you are really light with your braking or do allot of highway driving (allot more k's without having to brake at all).

Stockers are about the same, just add about 10 - 20 or so to the figures.

Remember, larger rotors increase the contact speed at the pads. Remember, relative speed = distance over time, since larger rotors have a much larger circumference, the relative velocity at the circumference is much larger.

For any given rpm, the speed at the contact area for larger rotors is increased greatly and therefor will wear down the pads faster.

I know this is a bit of a "gee thanks cpt. obvious" post, but sometimes we forget the basics and its always good to be reminded every now and then.

Oh, and if you have larger wheels this decreases brake pad wear also. See reasons above.

I had a similar problem several years ago. It was caused by a dag of metal that was protruding from the metal backing and embedded in the friction material of the pads. The pad was only 1/2 worn, but it was gouging a line on the disk rotor. It could be that or you have worn out the pads, but usually you will hear a consistant squeel/scrape as you drive due to the pad wear indicators rubbing on the rotors. Get them checked out ASAP.

I agree with ZapXR6T

Get them checked ASAP any markings like that will need to be machined out.. So the longer you drive, the worse it will get and the shorter the life of the disk (Due to deeper marks being machined out)

It is happening on both sides, and getting worse, so it would probably have to be worn pads

My mechanic has the car atm, brake pads are worn to the metal, apparently the wear indicator wore off a long time ago (before I got the car)

I have only had the car for 6,000kms, I am quite tame on the brakes most of the time

Anyway, new pads are going on there today, along with the 30000k service.

Cheers for your help guys!
