Hey people,

Thought id let you in on something strange that happened today. I work in chatswood and I had my car parked out the front of my office and I had to grab a box out of the boot the box was large so I wasn't able to close the boot. I took the box into the office while the phone was ringing, so I answered the phone and was talking for about 5-10 minutes after I hung up and walked back outside to close the boot to find a police car infront of mine and two female officers looking at my car and checking my meter. They then asked if this was my car and I said yes they said it was a offence to leave the car this way, I told them the situation and they were all cool about it and I told them I would definatly keep this in mind in the future.

I asked why it is a offence and they said it could indicate a abduction or something like that. I then opoligised and they were on their way.

Well I guess u learn something new every day..

Whats the fine for this if anyone knows?

Driving without due care and attention :spoton:

Kind of makes sense I suppose. I think it is also a problem if you leave your car unlocked, or is it with the door open? :spoton:

Another reason for this would be in case a child came along and shut themself in the boot.

Now that's my kind of kid - can we get them cheaper by the dozen. I just love kids that can just self-destruct without any coaxing from me ...

This is one of the sillier things Ive heard of. If someone can show me how leaving an unattended car with its boot open is a hazard then Ill eat a shoe. The odds of something untoward happening are surely a million to one. I mean, sure, weiners might be stupid enough to wander up, crawl in, pull the lid down...but what are the chances of that? 900 billion to 1

A classic example of the ridiculous comments we put up with from drunken morons on any given weekend

Try Section 213 of the Australian Road Rules:

"If there is nobody in the motor vehicle the driver must:

(a) Remove the ignition key; and

(b) If the doors of the vehicle can be locked - lock the doors"

The boot is classed as a 'door'.

The offence was brought about to stop people leaving their cars unlocked and making them much easier targets to pinch, or to go someway to stopping the epidemic of thefts from vehicles
