just out of curiosity

which XR would you prefer if money did not matter??

the XR8 or XR6 Turbo

if cost was factored in, I would go for the XR6 since it would be around 10 grand cheaper since the XR8 is rumoured to be priced in the low 50's

but if you had the money for both, which would you pick?

Its a tough decision and I could not decide, but I presume the XR8 would not have a very large performance gap over the XR6 Turbo

XR8 would be choice and the other thing is the performance difference is 240kW and 450Nm for the XR6T Vs 260kW and 500Nm for the XR8 :P

l would rather the turbo over an XR8. It will be a lighter car, use less petrol, be more balanced, be quieter on the road, and l believe have virtually identical performance to the XR8.

The XR8 may have 500nm vs 450, but that 450nm is available anywhere over the middle rev range (2000-4500rpm) The XR8's torque is a peak figure and is likely less than the turbo's at various points over the rev range. Then there is the weight penalty of the V8, probably somewhere in the 50-100kg range. Doesnt sound much, but if it was 75kg, then this is a around 4.5% heavier. The V8 has 20kw (240 vs 260) which is 8% more than the turbo. So the power to weight ratios are very close.

The Crumodore SS has 465nm vs 450 for the turbo. but the Wheels road test had the turbo accelerating from 80-120kmh 0.5 sec quicker than the SS in 3rd, 1 sec quicker in 4th and an amazing 2 sec quicker in fifth. Its that lovely flat torque curve at work. But granted the SS likes to rev.

So l cant see how the XR8 is going to have any significant advantage if any at all. So why pay maybe 8K more?

The bonnet scoop does look horny though.

Turbo over the V8 purely on less weight (better handling, and tyre wear) and fuel economy (as long as you're not pushing too hard). The ability to modify the car to get more power is also a consideration - it's a lot easier to extract more power out of a turbo (engine management systems aside than it is from a natually aspirated vehicle. Simple things like exhaust changes usually make a fairly large difference.

I'll go for the 8 because I am an 8 man. and after hearing the barra ute ad on tv, it's just made it even more rock solid. for long have I been waiting for ford to release another loud sounding stock v8. it's going to rock. this doesnt mean I wouldnt drive an xr6t, I like them.. but I wont want one unless they crack the problems with mods and allow me to push 350kw out of it.

but for now

bring on the 8 baby!

If money was no object, I'd grab the 8. It is all in the noise !! However .... money is important and for me, if the XR8 was affordable, I would probably go the extra mile and grab the GT. 290KW sounds damn good to me !!
