Standard Brakes

There is a lot of discussions on brakes. If we had XTs or Futuras than the topic would never rear its head. I have Premium brakes and am very happy. Its a question of economics. Ford had to keep the price below the SS. The XR6T should have come standard with Premium brakes. The GTs have it.

Hopefully the next series would have Premium brakes as standard. Then there is no question of whether you should get one or not. You'll have brakes that a car as brilliant as the XR6T should have.

Scott52, since last we spoke re your DBA's I have gone into this a bit more.. Reliable guys in the braking game are telling me that the standard rotors on the falcons are made of "crap cast".Hence the warping problem when excessivly heated, Even the premium fronts on the XR's, though, bigger in dia, are ordinary! DBA, & most of the aftermarket rotors are much higher quality! I had this problem on my last AU11, & changed to Herrod brakes,( which, BTW aren't $3000) just the 2 piston front, 1 piston rear ( which are identical to the premiums on the XR's, except different composition of cast in the rotors, & superior pad material). The difference under sustained heavy braking was amazing!..Remembering that AU11's already had 2 piston fronts!

From memory , about $2200... That included S/S braided brakelines, top of the range fluid... & BONUS , no more black brake dust over your rims. On the front calipers it has "HERROD" logo... On the tickfords,( AU's) It had TICKFORD, in this case, It has FPV... They ARE , I'm certain , the same PBR caliper... BUT the Discs are a higher grade of cast iron

Has anyone driven a a turbo with std brakes and then driven one with premium brakes?

Would love to hear your thoughts on the differences.

Be aware (not alert...) that Premium Brakes tend to wear rather quickly and can be quite costly at service time. A mate who had a TE50 paid about $1500 for 2 pairs of brake pads and one set of rotors at around 35,000km.

Don't know how relevant this is.

Found this site while looking at MRT's WRX forum, an explanation on disk warping from some brake expert in the US.

http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped...rotors_myth.htm

Basically the guy is saying that the warping is actually resin transfer from the pads to the disks when hot, which forms a layer on the disk.

They are saying that hard stops to stationary, when the disks are new, is the cause of the problem.

Having a manual, I try not to leave the pads clamped against the disk after a hard stop.

I haven't had a problem with my brakes yet, after 6000 km, including a week of "spirited" driving in Tassie. My turbo has the standard brakes and I think it pulls up better than my Magna Sports, which weighed 350Kgs less.
