So what are they off, Turbo6??

I dunno, that pic was sent to me via email from a mate, he is a VL turbo nut so it could possibly be off of one of those.

my guess is an XE or XF falcon.

Dave.

Nope ... definitely not off any straight six Ford I've ever seen. The bolt pattern is all over the place if you look closely at it. It looks so wierd it just HAS to be off a Commode ... :smilielol:

I can count 3 flanges (excluding the engine flange), one would be for the turbo itself, one would be for a external wastegate, and the other is???

All exhaust manifolds ive worked with have had only 2 flanges, one for the turbo, and one for the external gate.

It is for a second waste gate - a split pulse turbo will have the first stage wasting before the second one and therefore needs a separate wastegate.

Ive heard of split pulse turbo's, but never actually seen one working in real life.

Are they a bit of a :smilielol: or are they effective?

They were introduced to help prevent lag associated with small displacement motors. The idea is the first stage spools up quickly but soon reaches it's boost limit, by say 3000rpm. The second stage by now is spooling and takes over producing boost at higher revs. On some cars there was a benefit but on others it was found that by replacing the split pulse turbo with a single stage one actually had the engine performing better. Like most things it's a case of horses for courses - what works in one situation will not always work across the board.
