Hey Everyone,

I have a manual T, and I was wondering how do I know if the blow off valve is working properly?

As some of you have said you can clearly hear the BOV when you press the clutch in to change gears when you are giving the car a caning.

Now when it is cold I can hear the turbo spooling up very clearly, but I fail to be able to hear any kind off pshhh noise, or flutter, or ANYTHING when I change gears.

I remember reading about somone elses BOV being faulty since new, so I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to check it?

Thanks

Ross

Ross,

If you say take it to redline in second, then depress the clutch at the same time as releasing the throttle, there will be a faint Flutter (But you have to listen for it, it is not all that loud)

You may hear a slight psssst noise if it is working but you will definitely hear something if it is not working. I think XR Dreaming best described it as a 'turkey gobble' noise his made when he had his incorrectly fitted. As the air cannot escape, it has no choice but to remain as high pressure within the tubine and you will definitely hear a loud 'turkey gobble' from the cavitation effect within the turbine housing.

You can disconnect the vent side of the valve to try it but you would have to block the feed hose to the inlet just for the test and it is probably not worthwhile.

I suggest you just accept the fact it is working.

If you start to get the same fear about whether your inlet valves are working, it is probably time to dispose of your spanners etc. :gooff:

In standard XR6T's, the air is plumbed back into the intake side so the noise is not especially loud.

Mine has an air intake mod (XR8 Scoop on standard airbox) which has increased the blow off noise a little. Mine (and my brother's T as well) have always sounded like a "turkey gobble". Both cars have had this since new.

Whether this is normal or due to incorrect fitting I cannot say.

All Ts that I have come across have a slight Turkey Gobble when you back of from hard acceleration, mainly from the BOVs inability to cope with the vast quantity of excess air it suddenly needs to expel. The Turkey Gobble you get with a blocked BOV would be extremely loud, very hard to miss.

The standard BOV must be reasonable quality as it is the same one as fitted to some Audis.

As GOD666 said the easy way to find out if it is working would be to disconnect the plumb back house and clamp it off. This will alow the BOV to vent to atmosphere and you will definately hear it then if it's working.

Ford_Power - from what you have described your BOV semms to be working perfectly, if you cant hear anything that is good, mine was fluttering since it was new and ford service told me it was just the BOV, but the wisdom on this site informed me otherwise and guess who was wrong.

51XRT - try taking the BOV off and putting it back on again yourself double checking that the hoses and clamps are fitted correctly, you will find this will probably fix it and your BOV will function properly, that's all mine needed and has worked ever since.

Dazza.
