Has anyone considered the physical road conditions ?. The roads in Australia are far worse than the roads in Europe. It can be scary changing lanes at 110kmh across the ridges created by heavy lorries...What would it be like at 130kmh or faster.I don't know what roads you're driving on....I drive Sydney - Canberra every two weeks or maybe more often than that.I sit on 120 if the CB is going crazyand if it's raining lightly or moderatly. If it's a nice dry road, and the CB is quiet I will set cruise to 130 and stay on it till I get to Sydney or Canberra.I have NEVER had a problem changing lanes at 130. Even in my stupider days I've sat at 160 in my 1982 datsun skyline all the way to Canberra and I never had a problem changing lanes. So there are only three possibilities:A. You can't driveB. Your driving on sone sh*t roadsC. You didn't read what Miyagi said in his next post 3. I'm not talking faster speeds on anyware BUT the safest highways.. Cro,I was making a generic statement overall to the state of Australia's roads and not specifically the highway to Canberra, a road I have driven quite frequently.I don't have a problem changing lanes either at 130 or faster either, as I am an experienced driver. I'm just trying to highlight the fact that it can be scary, depending on the depth of the ruts, especially for novice drivers. The road conditions can deteriorate significantly before the RTA get's around to performing repairs.Overall the scheme suggested would be unworkable, as it would require individual classification of roads which could be eiligible (not just highways / freeways) and frequent checking to ensure that they remain a high standard. All too often when crossing state bounderies, I have found road conditions to be better outside of NSW. Admittedly I have not travelled into QLD or VIC recently, so perhaps it may be the reverse to what I experienced. It will always be down as to which state recently repaired the roads...Folks from VIC and QLD - Do you have any comments as to road conditions when crossing state boundaries into NSW ?, do you feel they differ ?As for the 3 possibilities ?1. I can drive, as I have a licence. As to whether I am a safe driver that could be interpretated differently by everyone. In my opinion I am.2. Bad roads ?, absolutely. I've driven on much better - Europe, and I've also driven on much worse, specifically Massachussetts, where because of the bad weather, they can't repair the road's quick enough. There is a stretch of 495 that is missing large chuncks of surface tarmac, and it has been the same for about 3 years.3. I did read the post. Who is responsible for classifying the safest highways ?, and what is considered safest ?. The number of cars, the fewest accidents, what ?. Stick to them and you'll be ok.Break them ( and get caught ) ....cop it sweet.Enough already. Careful Gaza, logical statements like that will get you into trouble around here when discussing traffic fines and speeding  Some people still have to fight with logic. No speeding = no fines = no points loss.........is it that hard to understand ?The constant excuse I hear for speeding is 'I am running late'. Well guess what ? They are even later when they get caught because of their speeding. If people plan theirs lives a little better they wouldnt be constantly 'running late'. I know things crop up every now and again that are out of people's control, but why is EVERYONE running late ?

Once Australia provides a good consistent standard of road building, then perhaps this is something which could be considered, just in increasing the limits to 120/130, perhaps even faster when technology becomes standard to keep a consistent distance from the car in front, thereby removing human reaction times. Someone once said to me "if there wern't so many d!ckhe@ds on the road ther would be no need for speed limits" He was quite correct. If we could trust everyone to drive according to conditions of road, car, upkeep of car, weather, zone, etc, etc there would indeed be no need for a limit. Unfortunatly this is not the case. I have seen many a young driver on a mountain road see the 100km signpost and try to do exactly that 100km/h up the mountain. Realistically this is not possible but they still try and this is where many come off second best. As to road condition I would have to agree that Great Britain has faboulous roads but this is not indicative of the whole of europe. As a general rule the lanes are slightly more narrow and certainly places like Spain and Italy do not have the same good conditions we experience here and yet they have higher speed limits. I can't argue with the likes of Switzerland who have even better roads than Britain but I can assure you Holland does not have any significant improvement on us and the vast majority of Europe has worse weather conditions than us. Go figure. I still maintain it is more to do with the driver education and upkeep of their cars. To repeat myself some of Europe has a minimum of 20 lessons required(4 on a skid pan) before even being able to try to get their license. Even then some fail the first try.Narrow lanescomparable road condition(with some exceptions)far worse weather conditions(and they still drive at 130+)Better compolsory driver educationbetter maintained carsHmmmm mayby this is the real key??????Really if everyone stopped thinking they were such great drivers and looked at the bigger picture then maybe we could start to change towards a better set of rules and speed limits by implimenting some of the educational techniques they adhere to over there. Trouble is no one wants to admit they are crap drivers in comparison to the average driver there.

Well said.I often see the biggest sh!tbox cars overtaking me on the highway in something that I'd be scared to do 60ks in. Speed doesn't kill. Morons do.
