I have 6 points to last me for two years.I constantly worry on the highway that I might get busted doing 125km/h which is a safe(perhaps safer) but illegal speed and bring my points down to 3 to last me for 2 years.Actually that wouldn't worry me, the fact I'd have to drive at a mind numbing fatigue inducing 110 for the next two years is something I really worry about. So in this way I think we the people who do more than the average amount of kms should have more points. On the other hand, if I didn't go through that red light, if I didn't do that burnout I would of had my full 12 points and I wouldn't have a worry in the world getting busted for 125 in a 110 zone. With the current points system, don't be a dickhead and you'll be fine.If anything, leave it at 12 points, and decrease the amount of points people with lower kms have. Then again, how would this be enforced? How will the RTA know how many kms a year a person does?

I understand exactly what you're saying and I have the same problem. I drive all manner of vehicles, and many country miles, a high proportion after dark. I drive to the conditions and with regard to the vehicle I'm in.I have only had one off road experience in over 30 years of driving and fortunately no other vehicle was involved and no one injured. It was early this year so is still very prominent in my mind. Gotta be lucky. But that's bye the bye, the point is there should be a different scale of licencing that recognizes a driver's ability/training and accident/insurance record. I don't think distance travelled is something that could be used as a criteria as it is almost impossible to accurately verify.I usually stick to within 10kph of the speed limit in built up areas in my cars, and about 10kph under the limit (built-up area or open road) in a heavy vehicle or public passenger vehicle. On the open road I'll try to stay at less than 15 kph over in order to avoid the cameras and radar but it is very difficult to stay alert at this speed on most of the roads I travel. On certain roads and at certain times of the night when I am certain it's safe, both from traffic and radar, I drive as fast as I can. Now I know nothing in life is certain, but every drive has a risk whether it's at 200kph at 2am on a deserted, well defined country highway or a 50 kph jaunt down to the local school at 3pm. I've actually witnessed more bad driving and vehicle collisions during the latter.Over the years I've also lost my licence a couple of times and am often driving on no points, like right now. So in the eyes of most I suppose I'm a bad driver. So be it, I can live with that. So save your breath (fingers) and don't bother flaming me you damn do-gooders 'cos I've been hearing it for years and it's like water off a duck's back to me now. hamo41 Member 33 Member For: 20y 6m 12d Location: Queanbeyan Posted 10/09/04 12:20 AM Share Posted 10/09/04 12:20 AM I feel 12 points is pretty adequate. :auto: I've had my XR since sep 03 and have 31,000 on the clock and only lost 3 demerit points so far by not paying attention through a small town about 300m long. I will rack up at least 45000 by years end. If you watch the speed you wont get booked( hopefully). Yes 110 is mind numbing I usually sit on 115-120 and have passed radars without being pulled over . I suppose it depends on the officer and tolerances.(it might depend on the car, age of driver, volume level of stereo and/or exhaust etc.) I know in the Military we give up to 10 Ks over before we book our blokes. maybe Plonky could give up some secrets on tolerances As for CC, it will set at just over 40. However I beleive in the bad luck theory.. wrong place, wrong time, wrong speed
Guest Scootre Guests Posted 10/09/04 06:51 AM Share Posted 10/09/04 06:51 AM (edited) It's certainly hard to keep the T under the speed limit at times. But there's always the speed alert thingy and a cruise control button. I keep forgetting the speed alert thingy is there though. I have NOT been booked while the point system has been in place. Maybe im lucky, who knows. Most of us have stretched the legs on the cars we drive, I am certainly guilty of that one. But I think if you are given 15 points instead of 12, that will still not be enough. All you will do is re-adjust your thinking, so instead of taking it easy after the loss of 6 points, you will take it easy after the loss of, say, 9.My 1.8 c worth.
