All this boils down to one point, if you don't want to be effected by smoke when you sit down and have your meal/coffee/perve/tugg/whatever GET THE f*ck OUT OF THE SMOKING AREA.

Have to disagree with you there Cro.

If I want to have a meal/coffee/perve/tugg/whatever I have that right, as I do the right to have it without being affected by ciggarette smoke. Would you like it if a bunch of people sat down near you and started letting f@rts rip? A bit of a silly comparison I know because f@arts aren't actually harmfull to other people's health (possibly harmfull to the f@rter if they don't let them out!).

Falchoon, you certainly have the right to enjoy a cuppa without cigarette smoke, but surely smokers also have the right to enjoy a cuppa with a cigarette ?

Sure, ban smoking indoors, because passive smoking is a known problem, but outside ?. Like I have said before, there are no indications that passive smoking is a problem in outdoor situations, unless the smoker is deliberately blowing smoke into your face, and I think the the majority of smkers are considerate of non-smokers around them.

How about we try and pass a law which bans everyone from driving, because who knows, your car or anyone elses could kill me !!

Ross, if you don't want to be affected by smoke, go to the non-smoking area.

also I think you'll find if there isn't a non smokers area smokers usually have the courtesy to go away from people to smoke.

I don't see why they should ban smoking in public, its not necessary.

But the smoke doesn't know to stay in the smoking area, it just drifts wherever the wind takes it so if I'm sitting near the smokers area chances are I will cop it.

Another silly exaggerated example. If a bunch of nuclear technicians sat down in the "Nuclear Bomb Making" area at your favourite resteraunt and started getting all their Plutonium and other radioactive substances out and you were sitting at the next table would you go "That's OK, they're in the 'Nuclear Bomb Making' area, that radiation can't hurt me." ? I doubt it. Yes, I know very silly example and it would never happen but just trying to get my point across.

By the same token if I came around to your house and you and/or your mates were puffing away then you are perfectly within your rights to and it is then up to me whether I put up with it or leave. The difference is your house is a private area, a pub, resteraunt, shopping centre is a public one ie the public goes there.

Ross, outdoor eating area's were designed for smokers. What are the chances of any smoke going INSIDE the resteraunt which is the NON-SMOKING area.

If you don't like it, sit in the NON-SMOKING area and you will not get any smoke comming near you.

Very silly. Does not even compare actually. Nuclear bombs/devices/substances have never been socially accepted in public area's as there is no need for them. Smoking on the other hand has been/is socially accepted behaviour.

I know what your saying. On the same token if someone smokes inside my house I will kick them out straight away. Like public eating places I have designated smoking area's OUTSIDE my house. If you want to light up, go outside. If it's raining/cold/snowing/hailing tuff sh*t the outside is the only place you can smoke.

Public eating area's are setup in exactly the same way since laws were introduced to stop people smoking in-doors where food is served.

Resteraunts/Cafe's/etc// knew that they would loose a lot of money if they didn't provide a place for smokers to smoke while they eat/drink coffee/etc..

Again, that is why there are OUTDOOR eating area's. To cater for the customers that smoke. AGAIN I'll say it, if you don't want to be exposed to cigarette smoke stay out of the DESIGNATED smoking area!
