pym Member 332 Member For: 21y 7m 23d Location: Sydney, Australia Posted 08/09/04 04:26 AM Share Posted 08/09/04 04:26 AM Mosman council (lower North Shore) have voted to ban smoking at outside restaurant / cafe tables (Vote was 10-2 in favour).Warringha council were considering something similar for Dee Why, but this got shut down even before it went to vote.Is this an infringement on smoker's civil liberties ?. Where will it end ? Now, at Mosman restaurants, you will be able to inhale 'pure' exhaust fumes that haven't been mixed with the occasional bit of cigarette smoke. Many took up smoking and got addicted... these people would be in their fifties to sixties at the moment..... to tell these people that they can longer smoke almost anywehere is insane..... after 40 odd years of addiction let them smoke. Today society is a lot smarter... most people wont taking up smokong anyway... but the ones that took it up a lifetime ago, let them live their life in peace happily smoking away..at the same token (while im defending you) if you smoke in your car... use your bloody ash tray

However, in open public spaces what is the risk of passive smoking, if any ?. Has anyone actually performed analysis of passive smoking when sitting outside, 6 feet away from a smoker. I doubt it, and even if they did I seriously doubt that there will be any 'passive smoking' risk, unless of course you deliberately blow smoke into someone's face as they are taking a breath.Being an ex-smoker also, I do agree with smoking bans in certain situations, however this is bordering on the extreme. If society bans smoking outside of cafes and the like, then perhaps we ought to ban roads outside cafes, bus stops, car parks etc, as the fumes may also be degrading to our health. So the government wants to phase out smoking all together before they start loosing money made on the tax we pay for each packet.I'm a smoker, I've smoked since I was 13, quit at 19 and started again at 21 till now (24).In that little time (compared to longer term smokers) I've seen many changes to smoking laws. 1: we couldn't smoke in the work place, only in designated smoking area's.2: they banned smoking on transport3: they banned smoking inside shopping centres4: they banned smoking on airplanes5: they banned smoking inside places where food was servedI agree with all of these bans except for number 5 UNTILL they setup outdoor eating area's FOR SMOKERSAs filthy as it might seem to a non-smoker we were given these on the street area's to light up as we saw fit.The problem is many non-smokers didn't see it this way. They thought it was nice to eat outside and therefore started complaining about people smoking around them....Before you disagree with me on outdoor eating area's being setup for smokers, ask yourself when you first saw a resteraunt/cafe place tables and chairs on the street. Was it BEFORE or AFTER smoking was banned in eating area's.All this boils down to one point, if you don't want to be effected by smoke when you sit down and have your meal/coffee/perve/tugg/whatever GET THE f*ck OUT OF THE SMOKING AREA. I understand that some people will complain about smokers and passive smoking but isnt this why we have outdoor seating areas. Some establishments even have 2 outdoor sections, 1 for smokers one for non smokers. People that dont smoke have the right to choose if they want to sit next to a smoker or not, smokers on the other hand have limited choices. You sit outside where you can smoke. But lets put the people asside for the time being, how is this going to impact on small business ie, cafe owners. I go to a specific cafe every thur with my friends and 8 people out of 10 that go there smoke. Must 8 people stop smoker in the out door section for 2 people. An even better questions is are those people going to continue going to these cafes?? I know I certainly wouldnt. I do agree with bans in enclosed places, but come on, outdoors. Get real!!My 3.14 cents worth

You can prove anything you like using statistics through cunning manipulation, and like others have hinted prior it will not be too long before alcohol bans take a similar path. Hell, maybe we should also ban swimming, think of the burden that it places on the community.Yes I am a smoker, and I also work in the hospitality industry, so either way I'm fukced I guess! Trent. Its funny cause its true!Cro makes more smoke when he lights a cigarette than when he "tries" to spin the tyres!I dont have a problem with smokers, its only when they blow smoke in my face that I do. I personally dont like it, mainly because ive seen what it can do to you.
