When I get below 1/4 I start planning on when I'll be going past a shell with Optimax. Usually happens around 50km to go.

Geea.

Me too normally start looking at around 80k when the light comes on, then we go from there.........

l notice alot you guys run it on empty, aren't you risking picking up all the sh*t at the bottom of the tank

I endeavour not to put sh*t in my tank in the first place  But yes, I know what you mean.

Is the pickup in the tank in the bottom, ie. does the fuel run into it by means of gravity or does the fuel pickup point downwards and suck fuel into it?

I have always worked on the principle that god gave us a fuel filter and that should stop the schitt getting to the injectors. Never had a problem since the days of my EH Expensive Daewoo so I have just continued to run it to vapours.

Getting paraniod right about now!

What about water? I remember having trouble with my old motorbike once and that was because the bowl on the carby was half full of water, and when I leant it over on a corner, it picked up a few drops too many. Gotta figure that water comes from the fuel, or maybe condensation from moist air getting into the fuel tank.

Do modern fuel systems have a water trap or something like it to prevent this happening?

I was filling when it got down to fumes, but now I do it about 1/2 left to avoid fuel starvation, which occurs somewhere under 1/4 to go.

Scotty

Hey scotty I think you mean when the car stops is it not

Normally between 20 - 40 k's I'd be looking to fill up however, I don't think most of us get as low as we really think. Point in question, I only just filled up yesterday $1.06per/l :w00t2: OUCH! DTE read 8ks still could not get a drop over 60 litres in. So even if your DTE indicator reads Zero you would think that you should safely have a few litres or better in there??I guess it all depends on how much you trust the fuel reader I know from some previous posts that these aren't all that accurate in some cases??

Somewhere between the chime at 80 and the light on at 50. Prefer Woolies on a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday - cheaper days in Sydney according to www.motormouth.com.au

I voted "Empty" as the chime sounding is the trigger for me.
