My car goes in on Monday to upgrade the trans.

The upgrade includes a trans cooler..... but I'm NOT certain about the type and location for it.

The type the trans guy recomended is about 600 mm x 80mm and goes across the front of the radiator, down low under the factory Intercooler.

This is a good location to maximise cooling air, and is ideal for continuous hard driving like track work.

However, my intention is to eventually run the APS PH3 intercooler, and there is NO room for the trans cooler in this location with the massive IC installed.

APS suggest a different trans cooler located behind the drivers side light. Whilst it is in a secure location away from potential stone damage, and allows plenty of clearance for the APS IC, I do NOT believe there is sufficient cool air flow in that location.

Is there anyone out there with an APS PH3 install, running a decent trans cooler?

If so, what type have you got and where have you installed it?

Have you monitored trans temps at all to assess performance?

cheers guys.

thanks in advance for any feedback.

tom

I do not have an aps system on my car but I have made my own trans cooler assy which sits under the left hand rear of the car with its own fan.

We have done 60000 km's with ours the fuild was clean when I serviced it last week the trans will last longer if the fluid is kept as cool as posible.

Ian.

my fan for the cooler cuts in at about 65 degrees.

Thanks for the speedy reply Ian.

I do recall seeing some pics of your installation. Very well done.

As a side issue, do you have an overtemp alert, or a temp gauge to monitor trans temps? How would you know if the fan has failed?

I guess I'm looking for the ideal solution which has fewer parts which can fail.

A solution might be to go ahead with the APS concept behind the right drivers side light, and remove the fog light and use it as a source of cool air with some flexible tubing......

I guess if I could confirm there are PH3 installations out there with the trans oil cooler located behind the light and they are running OK, it might allay my concerns.

Would like some actual measurements / feedback from installed systems.

cheers

I'm about to go down this avenue & am thinking I'll place it below the Intercooler maybe with a small deflector bar above to divert the air over it.

Geeseman I believe had/has his placed in this position & seemed happy with it. I'll be running a pod mounted temperature gauge to keep an eye on it, with the Qld summer fast approaching.

Tom , I have the APS intercooler :pinch: and have a trans cooler sitting horizontally directly beneath it in line with the top of the spoiler....can't tell you how well it works though as I've yet to fit a temp gauge....but like Scotty I will get one fitted before summer

I'll have a look in the morning and get some measurements for you..

Hi guy's,

Now that I have my Shaker Scoop setup for the CAI I have a big area on the passanger side where the factory air box was. Do you think that this would be a good place to mount the trans cooler. I was thinking of making a box and connecting the snorkle and maybe the xr8 plastic thingy that goes under the head light to direct cold air to it.

How big a trans cooler would you need?

Would it fit into the factory Air box?

what do you think

:crybaby: Seems a great idea to me macka, if you could get a cooler to measure 210 mm x 270 mm it would work a treat! :crybaby:

Or even 220 x 280 mm

Mark.
