Good topic !

The best engines I have had can be broken down into categories

I would have to say the best big block engine of all time is the 426 HEMI. Nothing comes close. (I have only even been a passenger in a HEMI powered "Cuda and it was an unforgettable experience)

However as far as overall tuneability and performance (as well as the most awesome distinctive sound) I couldn't go past the B/RB series of Chrysler big block engines (383/440)

These beasties are just an awesome motor and built with all the good gear straight from the factory such as steel cranks, huge valves and ports, hi flo manifolds etc.

I was getting an easy 320 Kw at the rear wheels with only changes in valve size, camshaft, exhaust and a 700cfm Holley on an Edelbrock single plane. As far as sound goes, the 440 has a mean distinctive sound (listen to the black Dodge Charger in Bullit, you will hear the definitive Chrysler Big Block sound)

As far as small blocks go, I am super impressed with the 351 Cleveland. I have had quite a few of them (two GT's - XY and XA RPO83 as well as my XCGXL, xD 4 spd, XY ute) though I do think the 289/302 Windsor is a better all round motor.

The Fords have a distinctive firing order and this is why they sound so hot.

The twin cam six in my Mercedes would have to be one of the nicest engines for power delivery/torque/sound etc that I have driven. I just remember though, that parts were expensive for it (especially water pumps and viscous fans)

At the end of the day though, if I had to pick just one engine it would have to be an RB Series Chrysler big block, even if only for the humungous power/torque output.

The 289 Windsor is an extremely close second.

The hottest sound I've driven would be my 4V 351, tunnel rammed with 12.5:1 compression going all the way to 7800rpm, many times, being backed by an Allfsat 4800 convertor just topped it off. That was about 9 years ago. It's been replaced by a 460 which just sounds so big, only about 350hp but the torque is MASSIVE.

More recently a mate's Mach 1 Mustang has a Clevo which produces about 550hp on Optimax/Ultimate & sounds as fast as it goes, totally streetable & horn to steer.

Then there is always the good old '03 f250 with it's Power Stroke 7.3 engine producing 684Nm's in stock form, it sounds great to just stand on it & listen to the Torque push her along.

Worst engine, B27E, Volvo 2.7 litre alloy hunk of sh*t. I had two corrode out on me before I chucked a 350 into the old 264.

Worst sounding generally, 6cyl Chargers with dual systems, there used to be a few down the Coast when we were being a nuisance there also, GUYS YOUR CARS SOUNDED sh*tHOUSE.

Anything supercharged sounds incredible, but I haven't got to drive one, yet!!!!

Scotty

p.s. turb06, you are correct, Toymotor, please get a life!!

I love the sound of my Triumph 955cc triple. Makes the hairs on my neck stand up whenever it screams around towards 10K rpm. Sounds magic, especially with my non-adr compliant pipe on it.

Not as quick as the Jappers, but is a totally unique sound. Go the Poms!

1. Favourite that I've actually driven would be my last car. An ED XR8. *sigh* I wish I didn't have to sell that car. With a 2.5 to 3inch exhaust, the V8 sounded beautiful. I'd drive around most of the time with the window down :o

2. Worst engine, the car that I replaced the XR8 with. A 93 Magna auto 4cyl piece of sh*t. Holy crap I hate that car.

Nicest sounding engine that I've never had the privilege of using? The V-twin in a Ducati 916. Ohhh baby they sound nice.

400ci Ford Galaxie, I had the privelige to drive had an awesome sound when you opened it up.

I've always loved the V8 sound but this Turbo has a pretty good note, from a low rumble to the whoooop when you nail it, for a stocky its not bad.

The best engine would have to be in the Honda S2000. You can drive it sedately and its just like any other 2L, but when you put the boot in it takes on a completely difference character.

The worst would have to be a Suzuki outboard motor. Nothing but trouble.
