I just recently joined up with TPG for the $20/200Mb/unlimited hours mnth ADSL deal, it's quick enough for me and I'm fairly confident I can stay within the Mb limit but I am having a lot of problem with dropouts. :w00t2:

Do you reckon this would be because it's a cheaparse plan and that's just how it is or some other maybe hardware related problem? Running a Celeron 2.3 with Win XP home and D-link DSL200 USB modem.

Ok, now everything ZAP said is true.

I worked once for TELSTRA WHOLESALE, which deals with everyother ISP, even OPTUS, so I know lats of people are anti TESLTRA, but hey, they are the ones with the infrastructure, that all other ISP's end up using somewhere along you connection.

For instance I have Telstra Cable. I have a 10GB limit, I pay 52.00 dolars a month, and have Uncapped Downstream, and capped 128Kbps Upstream. I average 1.8Mbps download speed, and (this is really wierd) 129 upload.

My mate on the other hand has Optus Cable, for one he said he is being ripped off in comparison price wise , and his plan which is very similar is a hell of alot slower. Now this is the brisbane area of course.

If possible though stick to Telstra or optus for best connections.

If your droppin out it is the provider my brother has optus cable with a 1.7 celeron win xp. The other thing is sometimes your phone especially if is a telstra white phone or any phone that has memory can draw voltage to recharge internal battery when that happens it can disconnect your internet.

Also if you have Call Waiting activated it causes your connection to drop out. This is because call waiting is an exchange based function, your phone doesn't have to be plugged in for it to affect your internet connection. But what stang said is true turue true.

Oh and stang don't get me wrong Optus is good, but it does come down to an area thing. I have heard of other people with the same cable plan with telstra as me, and they don't even get half the download speed I get, and they live in a less populated area than me.

Maybe we should all move to sweeden where you can have 10Mbdown and 10Mb upstream conections .

I got 1500/256, 60gb limit and a Static IP.

Bloody slow, can only download at 160kb/s, miss my old cable connection.

$200 each month, but I'm not paying for it :)

Cro,

You must have a good connection to get that throughput, the max the line can support is 187k/bS. I would be happy, but I love optus cable 500k/bS and 10Gb for $70 :lurvedealer:

It's a top line that I got here, totally happy with it. I was just comparing it with my previous optus cable account when I still lived in Sydney.

I'm not a big downloader, hell after netstats finished I was on the 550mb plan, I just love the speed. Top speed then was 1.1mb/s

$89.95 for 1500/256, 12G / month. Whirlpool is certainly the best place to look, especially their plan comparisons, as only this will allow accurately review the plans in line with your intended usage.

The only major gotcha I would highlight, is some ISPs count your upload usage towards your total...If you plan on using P2P this can be very bad...make sure you find an ISP that doesn't count your uploads.

In addition, ensure you look for a plan that reverts to shaping should you exceed your download quota...this prevents any excess charges especially should your PC become hijacked and used for DoS attacks, spamming etc.

As for modems, routers etc, depends on your setup. If you have multiple PCs and want to share the same broadband connection, then go with a combined modem / router which woudl also include an inbuilt Firewall (a must with all broadband connections). If a single PC, then a standard adsl-modem would suffice, however you may need to install some software on your PC to support the protocol and login, such as PPPoE. If you use a router, then the router do this for you.
