Mate of mine is looking at buying a BA ute, but wants the alloy drop side tray in place of the standard ute body (style side box in Ford speak). The XR8 isnt available as a cab chassis so l was wondering if anyone knew what would be required to do the swap.

Would it be a simple case of removing the ute body and bolting on the alloy tray and wiring in the tail lights? Or is there more involved?

Cheers Simon

Hi Mondie

I don't know the answer, but I saw one today in Adelaide. Had some pretty large, heavy duty tool boxes on the tray. The finish on the lower sections at the back of the cab, which is usually covered by the back section, looked a bit untidy. I didn't know Ford don't do a cab chassis or tray back on the XR, so I didn't really take much notice. Springs looked a bit more heavy duty than I expected, but I thought that was just because they were more visible.

Pity I didn't read your post a day earlier so I could have got some more details and a "phone" photo. As least I can tell you that someone in Adelaide thought the exercise was worthwhile.

Regards

zeke

Yes, easily done!

Remove Tub, build body, change lights over and done! I would add LED truck tailights to just finish it off nicely!

Plus most dealers will swap you a Tub for a tray depending on the colour you want. Because if its HgAg for example they can put the Tub from the XR8 onto an XL or XLS cab chassis therefore saving the customer some money.

Heres a nicely finished off XLS trayback.

OOPS, something seriously wrong with that one, hate to see a bad job!

Although I can't say that I've seen any BA XR traybacks getting around, my ex-neighbour has an AU XR8 with a stained wooden tray on the back and it looks very shmick indeed.

I can't see it would be a problem with a BA as they are the same chassis underneath as the XLS as XRBloke has mentioned, but don't go attempting to copy what was done it that picture.

Trent.

I saw a blood orange XR8 just yesterday with a steel stray.. looked SMICKO .. was going to take a photo.. but was half way through a corner when I noticed it so it didn't work out ;)

I dunno about the white one above, looks a bit monger :)

Thanks for the help all

Doesnt sound like too much is involved, but thanks for the hint on the back of the cab not being finished of Zeke, it never ceases to amaze me what Ford will do to save 10c.

My mate would most likely buy a genuine Ford alloy drop side tray and pick a car colour that best matches with it so it looks integrated. He actually wanta a ute for hauling stuff so the alloy tray is much more useful in his opinion than the style side or whatever its called.

Cheers

At the dealership I work for, we COMPLETELY remove the "tub" as I call it, and replace it with a full aluminium dropside tray. Usually a MMM design tray commonly fitted to Courier and Hilux's. Looks a shedload better than that other "thing" that XrBloke posted up..... no offence to said Bloke, but it looks terrible.

Win win for all, and the customer usually keeps the old tub, makes a great trailer!
