Qld Police have been told not to used CDRs or CDRWs in their BAs because the unit will eat their CDs which will require a trip back to Ford!

This is on standard XTs.

Somebody else made a post similar to this a while ago. I think you will find that this only refers to CD's with stick-on labels. If you just write on the CD it should be ok.

I know from experience that if the system has a problem with a CD, it simply spits it back out.

This old thread didn't answer the original question. Can anyone with BA Mk I Premium Sound play CDRWs?

I had a Mk II XT hire car for a week with the standard single CD and it played CDRWs but my Mk I Premium Sound won't

Got quite a shock when I saw this old thread (probably about the 2nd one I started) in the new posts!

And no, my premium sound does not play CDRW's. Just sits there thinking about it for a moment, then spits the CD out.

Mine plays CDRWs however sometimes it jumps around a bit, probably the way it was burnt (when you are in a hurry) when it is done properly I have no worries playing them.

1) CD-R and CD-RW are different standards. Many normal CD players will not like CD-RW's as they do not strictly adhere to the CD-Audio specification. (Red Book). In this case you can not use a CD-RW and must us a CD-R. To play a CD-RW the cd player must usually either be poorly adhering to standards, or specifically made to cope with CD-RW's

I agree with mickq about why CD-RW don't work in the current Ford CD players. I just wish Ford would get with the times and if they must only supply a single CD player as standard, at least make it MP3 compatible so that we can get some mileage off one plastic platter... My parents have a new Toyota Avensis and it plays MP3s on on CD-Rs (sorry BlueXR6Turbo, have not tried CD-RW yet) and I reckon it's just great. I've got like 75+ songs on one CD-R and it even displays the title, artist and song duration on the display!

By the way, if your CD player is jumping, it probably needs servicing. A cheap workaround is to take all your CDs and give them a good clean with a soft sponge and dishwashing detergent to get greasy finger prints and dust off them. If they are warped from heat exposure, maybe reburn some new ones onto fresh plastic. This helped with my Sony CD 10-stacker in my other car - I only had to clean them because my stacker is in the boot so warping was not a factor.

By the way, when I have the choice, my blank CD and DVD of choice is TDK. In my opinion, performance wise, never had a problem that I can recall and the quality of the product and packaging is excellent for a cost that is similar to other manufacturers'. Stems from my days when I used to use audio tapes alot (remember those...) and TDK was my blank tape of choice then as well.

Sorry, just tried to find a CD-RW to try out myself, but all I have at home are blank CD-Rs.

Thanks for the replies. Those that think they can play CDRWs might actually only have CDRs???

Likewise. But the MkII single CD played the same CDRWs that my MkI 6 stack spat out. I wonder if with the MkII Ford made the stereos CDRW compatible?

I think the brand/quality matters more with a CD-RW than a CD-R when it comes to playback, just buy a sh!tload in a spindle and ditch them when your bored of the songs, they're only about 20c ea nowadays
