Noisy premium brakes

I bought my Turbo with the premium brake package. I've done 1500km now and for the last 1000km (or so) the brakes have been (and still are) making a high pitched squealing noise under light to moderate braking. Is this normal? The braking performance doesn't seem to be impaired - they stop bloody quickly when required! I was going to ask the dealer about it at the 3000k service - but may get it looked at a bit sooner if necessary.

I would be interested to hear others experience with this brake package.

Yep, that is standard unfortunately with the premiums, Ford have been trialing a new pad that was supposed to get rid of the squeal but l am unsure if it has been released yet. Might pay to PM Redhawk as he has been chasing a solution on this for a while :glad:

Welcome to the Mad House jace1

The squeal is lovely ain't it. Check HERE for a possible solution.

Plan on getting my pads replaced at the 15K service.

Cheers,

Mick

Mine squeel like a pig on heat. Ford have released a new pad that fixes the problem, but I will wait until I have worn them down a bit more and then get a new set on the next trip to the dealer for warranty work.

I was told by a guy at midas once that the squeeling is caused by brake dust being trapped between the pad and disc, and when brakeing pressure is applied the dust vibrates fearsly and causes noise, like a cricket rubbing its legs together.

When looking at the design of the disc with the lines going around it, it seems those channels are a perfect place to get dust trapped in.

How bad is this squeal?

I had a massive squeal when my brakes got warmed up with my old brake setup, you could hear it with the windows closed and premo sound on 20.

Price you pay for having performance brakes..

Just a simple question here....

Has anyone tried cutting a narrow slot in the standard pad........

I've seen quite a few people use a hack saw to cut a narrow groove laterally across the face of pads.

It aids in preventing a build up of dust and also helps prevent cracks in the pad under extreme temperature applications. (especially if they are large pads)

Chamfering the leading edges of the pad may also assist in reducing the vibration squeal which occurs. It helps to minimise the chatter occuring as the pad edge meets irregular deposits of pad dust on the rotor.

I am now running around on the new pads that don't squeal, as instructed by Ford, it is a warranty fix ONLY for those that complain to their Dealer, and while I cannot tell if they are any better than the squeally pads, no matter how hard I try, I can't make these pads squeal... :pooh:

I love Zap's suggestion about waiting for your squeally pads to wear down before you get the new ones for free by complaining to your Dealer about the squeal. :msm:

Safe and happy driving...Dr Z. :pinch:

I agree with Dr Z.

I had mine replaced yesterday, so I haven't had much of an opportunity to verify. What I can say is that they haven't squealed since I picked up the car.

Cheers

Give the new pads from Ford time to bed in guys and wear all the little imperfections off the pad surfuce before you think the squel is gone. When your new pads get slightly worn and perfectly flat they will start to glaze and back to square one.

When you go back and complain what the dealer will do is remove the pads from the caliper and rub the contact surfuce with some rough sand paper to give you the original imperfections back and no more squel for another 2-3000km.The debate on removing absestos from brake pads will go on for years I am sure.I bet if there was a site for Mercedes or any highly expensive car the same topic would be bought up and discussed.
