Eleanor

Original Airdate: July 20, 2004

The Learning Channel

Form the TV Show RIDES

Look at her — beautiful lines, curvaceous, ultra-sleek and the star of one of the biggest car flicks of all time. She's now being handcrafted, one part at a time, in Dallas. The place that makes this beauty is Unique Performance. She's Eleanor, Nicholas Cage's leading lady in Gone in 60 Seconds, and you too can have one of these way-cool GT-500E rides for yourself. But before you open the checkbook, check out the episode where we'll see an Eleanor get built from start to finish.

Along with Eleanor, we'll see other legendary muscle cars and take a look at the whole culture of high-performance street machines and go-fast customized vehicles; American-built classics made into the stuff that zooms by faster than you can blink. As the build of the new Eleanor unfolds, we'll also look at the other projects at Unique Performance, a specialty shop where looks and horsepower come together in cars that are both new and time-tested; state-of-the-art within the most famous, classic models — like the GT-500E, crafted into the (almost) one and only Eleanor. This hour will also include interviews with baseball great Jason Giambi and the legendary Carroll Shelby. As one of the great muscle men on the diamond, Jason is the perfect fit for a muscle car and is having one built at Unique Performance. As for Shelby — well, how could we explore the GT without hearing from the creator and master?

The raw material that will eventually be reborn as an Eleanor — the car made famous by Nicholas Cage in Gone in 60 Seconds.

The Unique Performance team gets started on the exterior of a GT-500E.

A brand-new power plant is now in place.

The completed Eleanor hits the street.

The real Eleanor was a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in Yellow Blaze.

The original movie craps all over that sad excuse for a remake !

Was going to say, wasn't the GT-500 as 'Elanor' made famous by Steve Macqueen in the original 'Gone in 60 Seconds'? NOT Nicholas Cage Coppola?

BAH, give me a Charger Daytona Hemi ANYDAY...

The original movie was made by a guy named Toby Halicki. He drove the Mustang Mach 1 in the movie....he wrote, produced and directed the movie.

Eleanor is a 1973 Mustang Mach 1 with the 351 Cleveland engine

Though it has a hell of a time trying to outrun the 1970 Dodge Coronet 440's (police cars with the split grille), the 1969 Dodge Coronet 440's and Plymouth Belvedere's (4 door version of the Road Runner and Super Bee)

The Chrysler Police pack had the 440 Magnum engine (375hP and 484 ft/lb torque) as well as Heavy duty brakes, suspension and special Police tyres.

Actually Lumpy....I prefer the 68 Charger with either Street HEMI or 440 Six Pack or the 68/69 Plymouth Road Runner/Dodge Super Bee with the 440 Six Barrel option.

Though a '70 HEMI 'Cuda would be very very nice.

The winged cars were a little too over the top for me :)

Yeah that is true about the Daytona being slighly over the top, with the rear wing being 3 foot tall and extending ABOVE the roof line! For those unlucky enough to be unfamiliar with these cars:

wcimnday1.jpg

wciimhf4.jpg

wcigr891.jpg

wcisb3.jpg

They were also the first US Stock car to run over 200MPh:

http://aerowarriors.com/gifs/200mphrun3.gif

In fact they were SO succesful that any car using these wings were limited to a sub-305ci (5.0L) engine, where as in 1970 they were open and using a 426ci (6.9L) Hemi, that in STREET trim with two 425cfm carbies were rated at 425Hp/490ft-lbs. In street trim speeds of between 130 and 150Mph were achievable and:

  Quote
Jim Fredericks' SuperBird, "Fly Rod", exceeded 216 MPH in the B/Production class at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the late 1980's. This made it the world's fastest production (gasoline fueled, normally aspirated) winged car.

On the down side 0-60MPH was in about 5.5 and they ONLY cut 14.26 seconds quarters albeit at 103.7MP-H.

I'd still have one but, and the Superbirds are very nice (honestly, I couldn't really differentiate between them)

The Daytona is a Dodge Charger (Doge Charger 500 actually) with the nose cone and wing.

The Superbird is a Plymouth RoadRunner with the nose cone and wing. Both cars are different body shapes.

The Charger was a shape exclusive to Dodge but the Road Runner was shared with the Dodge Super Bee..

The Superbird was more successful than the Daytona.
