Now that the T is fully run in, I was thinking of using one of the "expensive" PTFE additives in the engine. What do you think? Are they benificial and would be complementary to a good oil or are they just a very expensive bottle of goop with dubious benifits? Are there any dangers using them with a Turbo engine?

It is generally not a good idea to add anything to a engine oil. In most cases you are actually reducing the performance of the oil. Engine oils are formulated using a careful balance of additives and when you add something to the oil you are throwing out this balance.

I found a bucket of sand in the sump works wonders.

PTFE have been known to cause serious problems, stick with a high grade oil

Ive got a bucket of sand in my expansion tank!

I was under the impression that the stuff coats all the engine parts with a few microns of teflon or the like, which is meant to reduce "fisrt start in the morning" wear and tear when all the oil has drained into the sump, the benefits of this would only truly be known say after 250,000ks or something I would think, but if it changes the engine oil properties it could be a bad thing. If it gives the motor an extra 100,000k's though it could be a good thing. I bought an old XC 302 years ago for a bush slugger/work transport the engine was a bit "had it" but I used the teflon crap for"old motors" in it and I got 200'000ks out of it without touching the engine, I sold the engine in the same condition as I bought it for $400 bucks

I've added 'Slick 50' to my old XF falcon and now to my BA Turbo and noticed a free'er running engine on the first run round the block taking the required half hour drive to run it in and also seen an old stationary engine run for hours without oil at all. I just feel it works. I also use the recomended Castrol Magnatec oil in my turbo.

Before adding Slick 50 or Teflon based additives you might want to read this -

Slick 50 Link

I recon it'd be great stuff in a outback rally, or even to quieten a noisy box or diff, or on an old engine, but after reading the link above, aint no way its goin in the T.
