Crikey.

I'm a dead set coward, scared of heights, not a good passenger, so any of my experiences have been mostly accidental/stupid but here they are anyway in random order.

Stayed married for 33 years.

Mistakenly drove for 5-6 miles right through the middle of the black neighbourhood in Chigago.

Brought my girlfriend (Later wife) home at 4.00 am on new years eve after being down Kings Cross. She was 17. Wasn't game to face her father for 2 weeks.

Drank snake bile and other nasty and unspeakable stuff in China.

Drove an MGB at 105mph with 3 passengers.

Managed to get my Volvo 144 opposite locking at 90mph.

Broke ribs trying to resurect my water skiing skills after 30 years and 30 Kg. Did it just trying to get out of the water with both feet in the ski behind a 5.7 litre inboard.

Wrote my boss an official email telling him he had an alcohol and bullying problem and that he was rorting his expense. He eventally got me resulting in me being unemployed the wrong side of 50. (Sometimes the baddies win)

At around 11-12 myself and mate used to sit .22 shells on the concrete and try to set them off by firing air rifle pellets at them.

We also used take turns to climb small trees and ride them down when the other kid chopped them down. (*For Plonky* Just down in the back scrub off Kensington Park Rd)

Used to go down the creek and have bow and arrow wars using arrows with the heads of darts jammed on the front.

Survived making balloon bombs filled with a mix of oxy and acetylene.

Really did almost drown down the creek before I could swim when a mate pushed me off the tube was using. An older kid pulled me out and pumped the water out of me.

Dont like large hairy spiders but I've been known to squash Redback's with my fingers and I'll pick up any reptile. Crikey again....

Bungy jumping etc etc....It'll never happen.

Hope my son doesn,t read this Plonky or then again maybe he should,he wants to join the SA police! What would your advice be to a nearly 18 year old be,contemplating that career path?

Hey, Mr X. You might need to be more concerned if he wanted to be a farmer, fisherman or logger. The facts are that these occupations (among many others) entail a much greater risk of injury and death than being a cop.

I know this might seem hard to believe, but it's true. Part of the reason might be that most Police forces take Occupational Health and safety seriously, in contrast to eg the average farmer. Also the other occupations involve more continuous exposure to the lethal hazards.

Of course, some areas of police work involve higher risk than others and most of the available info isn't broken down to show this.

Be a paramedic! That's my advice!

I am only 23 and a policeman, joined too young (at 20).

Seriously though, I can offer all sorts of advice for your son, if you are interested, send me a PM.

Antony.
