Guest Big Mick Guests Posted 05/08/04 11:12 AM Share Posted 05/08/04 11:12 AM Here's another thought about were to vent the catch can.Why could it not be vented back to thefuel purge canister. any oil that goes back will be mixed with fuel vapour and eventually back to the fuel tank, a little drop of oil back there would'nt hurt.Does this make sence. Mmmm, a bit of lateral thinking there Macka, but I'm not sure I like the idea of mixing fuel and oil, afterall isn't that what we are trying to prevent from happening with the catch can?Cheers,Mick

Where only talking about condensing oil vapour from the bulit up pressures within the motor. Thewamount of oil that would be going back into the fuel tank full and mixed with 80Lt of fuel would have no effect on fuel quality. It would solve 3 problems. 1. Seperating the oil/air then keeping 2. Everything legal buy not venting to atmosphere. 3. No possible mess in the engine bay.that's how I will be diong it.PS I'm also thinking that you should be able to make one using a cheap oil filter. Just change it for a new one when it's full. The filter should trap the oil pretty well don;t you think. macka
Guest Big Mick Guests Posted 05/08/04 12:00 PM Share Posted 05/08/04 12:00 PM Macka,Mate you hit the nail on the head "If the catch can is designed properly". My problem is at the moment I'm not sure of what a properly designed catch can looks like, particularly on the inside.I love the idea of the oil filter, but my question is the same as with the fuel filter, how well do they flow air (or oil vapour) and if it presents a significant restriction will this cause a problem?I believe you can safely vent the catch can back to the existing inlet on the crossover plenum and still keep it legal.Hey, I know I'm being the devils advocate here, but in my other life I'm paid to find out why something won't work and then to make it work correctly. Unfortunately, the path is often a tortuous one.... Keep up the discussion guys, this is very constructive..Mick

Nissan 4x4 fuel filters are a solid canister.I'll get my misses to suck on it. She can suck a tennis ball through a garden hose. I'll watch how red her face goes and how much her eyes bulge to measure the restriction.I'll let you know how it turns out.

If you plumbed it back to the intake side of the turbo there sould be enough suction to do the job and would be more efficient than just a catch can arrangement. I'll give the experiment to the miss's and research the result. I'll post tomorrow evening. If I had a digital camera I would take a pic of her doing it. MMMMM might be a good reason to buy one. I'll call into Harvey Norman after Supercheap macka

Guest Big Mick Guests Posted 05/08/04 12:53 PM Share Posted 05/08/04 12:53 PM Alright Macka now you've got me interested....You can borrow my digital camera as long as you post the pics... I'll try and get a vacuum gauge from work tomorrow, buy a fuel filter and test the difference in the vacuum, connected to the car (I don't think I could convince my missus to provide the vacuum source), over the weekend. We can then compare the results...If I can find an adapator for an oil filter I will test that to.Mick
