Guest Big Mick Guests Posted 03/08/04 11:48 AM Share Posted 03/08/04 11:48 AM I will have a look tomorrow underneath a XR to see how hard it would really be to tap some sort of fitting in somewhere. It would be nice to have it draining automatically, rather than having to manually empty it every X amount of kays.... Mick, I agree it would be better to plumb a drain it back into the sump, but unless there is an existing hole I ain't going to drill and tap a hole in the sump while it's still on the engine .I'll be interested to read about what you find tomorrow.Mick

It is one that doesnt drain back into the sump but has an oil level meter on the side and a filter ontop. I have been told thought that vented catch cans are not legal, but I am not sure on that. Here is the link to the catch can I bid on, as you will see you can pick them up pretty cheap if you cant build your own. Here That looks too big for the T,where would you mount the mother??I had my turbo pipes off when I put in extra heat shielding in(to try and stop the paint from bubbeling, now I just think its just a paint job) and wondered where that oil film came from, stupid ford

I'd be much happier to replace the oil with fresh oil when enough comes out to be needed !The other issue you would find with those cheap oil catch cans, is the size of the lines (I have seen one and they are too small) The lines would need to be at least as big as the one fitted by the factory that is plumbed back into the manifold.Just my thoughts !! Chris xr6 Member 376 Member For: 20y 10m 25d Location: Shire Posted 04/08/04 02:10 AM Share Posted 04/08/04 02:10 AM The oil vapour is created by the spalshing of oil etc in the sump the hotter the engine and the harder (more revs) your giving it to your engine the more vapour you will produce The reason this vapour becomes a problem is that the crankcase does become pressurised because of blow by, (air fuel mixture forcing its way past piston rings) blow by is more pronounced in turbo cars due to the higher cylinder pressures (boost plus normal atmosphere = higher pressure)In a factory car (EPA compliant) the vapour is routed back into the inlet tract to be burned in the combustion process.problem is that small amounts of oil vapour dramatically alter air fuel (effectively lowering it) ratios as you guys with modded cars should realise even a few tenths of a point will make big differences!!there are no adverse affects from draining the recondensed oil back into the crankcase (it hasnt been cooked etc)Just understand its not epa compliant that doesn't mean I won't install one though!Oh yeah and they are required at many CAMS sanctioned motoring events! Id have a look at a T but the only one is 10 cars deep and I cant get it on a hoist today.....

Posted 04/08/04 07:58 AM Share Posted 04/08/04 07:58 AM Went for a drive to autobarn. They have a oil seperator can there with a screw in th bottom for $70. its a good size (looks about 6"-8"). What sort of pipe and connections would people recommend. Also after having a look under the bonnet, I was wondering where the best place to mount it would be.They also have the can with the pipe on the end if you want to drain the oil to another part of the car.Look forward to any input.Geea.
